Like many of the Cherokee Alpine Trails in the Lake Martin Area. The Smith Mountain trails (4 in total, overlapping in places) offer great views and wonderful challenging hikes. These trails vary widely in difficulty and are really short trails, around 2.4 miles at the longest. The fire tower is awesome and has beautiful views from the top.

Not sure why it is called “Alpine” but there are several beautiful trails including a 1/2 mile walk to a fire tower that you can climb. Plenty of parking. No restroom facilities but there is a nearby convenience store.

Being in central Alabama, it’s hard to find hiking trails with great views that aren’t several hours away. I took the fire tower trail which has beautiful rock formations and a high view over the lake. For the most breathtaking views, you must climb the fire tower to get a panoramic view for many miles. I’m honestly out of shape but this particular trail was relatively easy. I would recommend hiking boots or shoes with really good grips as you will be climbing over rocky areas...

I really liked this trail! It was very easy to follow. Going to the tower was fun as well. While here I even visited the lake.

After you go to the tower there is a midway point that will allow you to jump on the blue trail to go to the lake. The water was perfect. I could still see my feet...
