The trails are beautiful. I usually power-walk by taking the Sussex Branch Trail from the parking lot near Jefferson Lake and go upto Cranberry Lake and back. However this trail goes all the way to Lafayette, so its good for biking. I've also taken other trails that can be accessed from the Sussex Branch trail. The ranger loop with red blazes can take you east and hit 206 near Byram Shoprite and Salt Gastropub. Once I hiked to Salt and had a few beers before heading back. I also took the shorter Iron mile loop which has some steep climbs of moderate difficulty, and can be a good high intensity workout. I've gotten lost on the yellow trail called the Pebble loop, the trail blazes are a bit confusing and we ended up following similar yellow blazes to a private property with no-trespassing signs and had to head back the way we came back. May try this again some other time. Birding opportunities are ok, I've seen plenty of red-winged blackbirds, woodpeckers, gnatcatchers, flycatchers, orioles and vultures. The portion around Jefferson lake is...
Read moreThis sight in New Jersey, Byram Township. This area is very high in elevation. Must be in good health condition to trek this mountain. This is high in the mountains not far from the Poconos in PA. Nestled in between beautiful neighborhoods. Area is all hills. This will cause stress, wear and tear on the car breaks, just a warning since there is a lot of slowing down the hill and going up the hills once your back on very flat land. Great for vehicles with a 4-wheel drive, trucks, SUVS, or outback Jeeps. This area has many scenic spots to stop. Great place for photography excursions, hiking, nature friendly for the kids, fishing, biking, picnics. Great for winter sports: ice-fishing. Lake on sight for great exploring. Dog friendly. Bear sightings, bare with caution due to wild animals on sight! Mountain bike friendly. Very peaceful and a lot of activities to do...
Read moreIt's a quiet place with beginner trails. All the trail heads start alongside of she Sussex trail which is around 2 miles and flat all over but very clearly marked, you will also pass the Jefferson lake. Beyond that , the trail continues to the beautiful cranberry lake where there is no more trail and you'll have to go a little beyond into other park. Beware that private areas are not clearly marked, so check the signs that it's designated for public use. Would recommend for a run or jog as it's short , but if you don't get enough, do try the iron mine trail or the Byram trail which should be along the Sussex trail head. Also would highly recommend bug repellant as the vegetation is thick. Except one restroom at the trail head...
