First, I need to preface that my reviews are not "politically correct" but very honest as I see things.
"The Roeblings from Saxonburg" was the second play Mom and I attended at the Freeport Theater Festival.
The play we saw last year and this one were both written and directed by Rennick Steele.
Mr. Steele obviously has a passion for local history. I don't believe anyone can deny that. Mr. Steele wants to preserve and tell the story of those he portrays in his plays.
The problem is this: his play write skills are lackluster at best.
"The Roeblings from Saxonburg" for example, was nearly 3 hours long. As was the previous play Mom and I saw written and directed by Mr. Steele. By the time it was over, my eyes were glazed and I had no concentration left. All I could think of is getting home and going to bed.
There was way too much detail given throughout this play (and the other play) that is unnecessary. I think I took a crash course in building bridges last night. Way too technical and the minute facts and details weren't needed and considered "fluff".
The entire story could've easily been told in half the time it took.
The theater itself (the physical theater) is great for small performances and is clean...
