Road that takes you to the cabins is extremely tough on your car, very large potholes and large rocks make up the entire 3mi dirt road. It takes 20min just to make it to the main part of the campground.
The port-a-pottys at the cabins were in dire need of being emptied and smelled so bad from even 20ft away, thank God it wasn't super warm while we were there. They were maintenenced the evening before we left (of course).
There was no running water available at the cabins and we were notified via email just days before our stay. The showers at shower house #1 didn't work properly and ate quarters but gave no heat. The only shower that we could get to work would only work on full blast like pressure from a fire hose, we couldn't even take a full shower that's how strong it was, the water was just going everywhere. I called the office about this and was told no one was there to go check the showers and to go to the other shower house (mind you my young children were already undressed and we had to walk quite a ways to just get to the first shower bldg so this wasn't an option imo).
The only plus side to our stay was that the cabin was well maintained and the beds were comfortable and clean. We won't be going back unfortunately, the above cons...
Read more3 stars for mountain biking at bear Brook. Beautiful state park with a lot of different experiences ( hiking, fishing, picnicing, camping and biking). For mountain bikers, you will have a difficult time finding a trailhead. Once you do get to a trailhead and park, you will find that the trails are poorly labeled, if labeled at all. When you do finally get on a trail, you think you'll be able to guide yourself through using the signs at a fork in the trail, there are sometimes no sighns at all, and if there is a sign, it is small, difficult to tell which direction it is pointing, and sometimes hidden behind trees. Okay for hikers, but not the greatest when you're hoping for some enjoyable single track and want to keep riding. Any enjoyable flowy track you may find quickly becomes janky, difficult, and not really fun to ride. One of the main trails leading to a trailhead is now covered in loose gravel and sugarsand-like dirt, so good luck riding that to your desired trail. In summary, this is a very beautiful, natural park, but it claims to have something for mountain bikers, but trails are poorly marked and maintained, and in my honest opinion, much more...
Read moreI was recommended this state park by a friend years ago. I have been going ever since. My wife and I have tried many of the sites all around the campground and haven't found one that we didn't like yet. Each spot has something close to it for kids, dogs, bicyclists, swimmers, etc. My friend suggested it because I had purchased a recurve bow and they have a range in the park. The staff have been friendly and we've never had an issue with noise or other patrons. Each time we've visited, a nearby site has offered help (we forgot butter most recently) and/or good conversation. The last three times we've gone, we rented a canoe for a few hours and went on a cruise. There's kayak's as well, but we prefer working together to get to our destination. The buddy I mentioned above visited the bike trail around the lake and then stopped in to visit us. He stated the ride was under an hour, but really fun ride. My wife and I took a walk on the path and the views are stunning. We love nature and you're left with a sense of peace that city life cannot compete with. It is real easy to book a site with the ReserveAmerica...
