A fishing and hunting paradise. All the surrounding areas from Mt. Shasta to Lassen Volcanic National Park is a must see and must experience adventure. There are many types of venues for weekend camping, some are unique, but I have discovered accomodations are limited. I personally own an undeveloped three acres in Modoc County near a town called Lookout, geographically positioned to conveniently visit or experience any number of places in the scenic Nor Cal area. I mention this because it occurred to me what I should do with this large of a property located within the Southern Cascade Mountains in beautiful forested area. I am going to turn it into a fishing, hunting, and recreational camp and eventually open it to the public. This is the perfect answer for how to use this property as the population swells throughout the are during the Spring, Summer, and Fall months, making it difficult for vacationers to find places to stay and enjoy this tremendously beautiful area.    Read moreI was very impressed with Modoc NFS for a couple reasons.
The Ranger station in Altura was very informative and helpful in directing me to the obsidian mines for some rock hounding. The permit process was very quick, and the staff was very pleasant.
The two campgrounds (Plum Valley and Lassen Creek) I stayed at were clean and well maintained. There are no trash services however, so please pack your trash out.
I noticed that they were actively thinning the forests up in the Warner Mountains, removing not only dead trees, but a lot of the built up floor fuel and creating large composting heaps, very smart and proactive on their part. Shasta needs to take some notes from this crew.
Overall, it was a great week to be up in Modoc, and I salute whoever is making the decisions up there, keep up...
Read moreIts a great place to enjoy the outdoors. From camping and hiking to fishing and hunting. The scenic mountains and the crisp clean air make the Modoc National Forest a great place to get away. With abundant wildlife and lots of open space. There are many lakes, rivers, and streams for fishing, boating, or swimming. Many areas offer trails for hiking or you can go and find your own trails in most areas. Some of the historic attractions are Captain Jacks Stronghold where the Modoc Indians held off the U.S. Calvery. There are also lava tubes for one to explore as well as medicine lake and glass mountain. Also the bridge in Lookout where the last hanging in California took place when the Hall family 6 in all the youngest only 16 were hanged for alleged cattle and horse rustling...
