Modoc National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge of the United States located in northeastern California. It is next to the South Fork of the Pit River in Modoc County, southeast of Alturas. The area was first claimed by the Dorris Family in 1870 under the first of the federal Homestead Acts.

Camped at Blue Lake the past 3 days & it was beautiful. We were the only ones in a really nice campground with tons of spaces. There are no electric/water hook ups, but it was awesome in our camper with all the comforts of home. The ranger told us it gets crowded after school gets out (it's 5/15/19) & on the traditional big weekends, but you can almost always find a place. Is off Hwy 395 at Likely, Ca. Nice little stop to check out some migratory birds like Mallard, Brewers Blackbird, Red Winged Blackbird, Western Meadowlark, Killdeer and Willet, which were witnessed in about 10 minutes there. Oh, you're not likely to see a pink-tailed Pomsky though, that was ours. :) I'm sure there are other birds but we couldn't stay longer.

Great place to enjoy a walk on the trail. You can see wildlife all over the place. There is also an auto tour if you only have time for a drive through. Visitors center is nice and the staff seem very friendly. Enjoy fishing and swimming at the reservoir or go waterfowl hunting during the normal season. It has fun possibilities...
