Make sure you know what you are doing and where you are going ahead of time! Expansive preserve with a driving tour... but the one walking trail I happened to find was completely overgrown - and we got bit/stung several times in the first 3 minutes of venturing into the brush, bug spray doused and all. End up running - quite literally - back to the car to drive the rest of preserve. Which is a shame since I brought my camera and my dog to have an afternoon adventure.
At the Discovery/Information Center, there were no maps, pamphlets or self-serve driving tour CD's available. The main pavilion was closed due to bees.
Kind of disappointing to drive 1.5 hours and be so limited due to a lack of available information. I will say though - I didn't come across a single car/adventurer the entire time I was there. So it seems like a great place to get away on your own.
I might try this place again once it's cooler and I have a...
Read moreThe HQ area (FM 2004 addy) only has one public use walking trail (and very nice staff). Otherwise, you'll want to go to the Discovery Center on 2022 CR 227. This is the main public use area, which includes some trails and a very nice driving tour (perfect if it's naptime and you have a Little in a carseat). We saw a great deal of bird species and a very large, very calm alligator during our drive. For the most part, I stayed in the car to take pictures, but occasionally pulled over and got out for a better shot.
Had some pretty serious birders when I went there. Or at least people who had enough money to get some serious birder lenses for their photography.
Bonus- stop by the nearby Bastrop Marina for some snacks and drinks after if the NWR Visitor's Center is closed. Support local business and get some guaranteed shots of pelicans and gulls while...
Read moreI am so glad that I decided to visit this preserve. The park caretakers were ridiculously friendly and helpful. We didn't have much time to spend at the park but I think we got a lot out if it. The water was very low when we went and we could see so many baby alligators surrounding their mother because of the limited water cover. You can walk along an extensive wooden bridge system to view this area. The way it is set up basically covers all areas of the pond so you are basically sure to see something, especially when the water is low. This was a huge attraction for the kids. It felt as if we were very close to the nest and the mom kept popping up to watch us. It was quite amazing. This park also offers a digital audio tour to play via CD as you traverse the rest of the preserve by car. I thought it was fairly well designed...
