The Mill District — Attraction in Angola

Have your wedding here!!! We held our wedding at The Mill District in August of this year and would give 10 stars if we could! My husband and I, along with many friends, are based in Chicago and our families are in the Detroit area. The Mill District is the perfect venue to meet in the middle, about 3 hours from Chicago & 2.5 hours from Detroit. There are plenty of lodging options nearby as well for out of town guests.

The venue is gorgeous with areas for an outdoor or indoor ceremony which gave us peace of mind if the weather didn’t cooperate. We held our ceremony on the lawn in the ceremony pavilion which is hugged by the stone storehouse, indoor ceremony barn, reception barn, and many trees making wonderful backdrops for photos. Our cocktail hour took place under the trees behind the ceremony lawn, with appetizers on the wrap around porch. Our guests loved getting to see all of the venue areas and being able to spread out. We then ushered guests into the reception barn for dinner and dancing. The reception barn offers a beautiful and intimate feel while also having enough space for a large group and plated meal service.

Our wedding party stayed at the post office and cottage buildings at The Mill the night before the wedding so there was no concern about people running late the big day. Both accommodations have everything you need for your stay. The Cottage has bay windows which offered natural light that our makeup artist loved, along with a big dining table to spread products out. The groomsmen loved playing games in the game room while us girls spent the morning getting ready.

Jourdan & James, the owners of The Mill District, are the absolute best. We opted to add on the planning and decor package and I’m so glad we did! Jourdan has the best eye for all things event design - centerpieces, placement of signage, ceremony floral design, you name it and I have no doubt Jourdan will be able to design it. During our final walk through we realized we hadn’t discuss decor for the ceremony arch, Jourdan asked if we wanted it decorated and we said yes with full confidence that Jourdan & her team would create the perfect arrangement (and it was beautiful!). Jourdan also ran our rehearsal when we had a few hiccups with outside vendors and ran a tight ship on our wedding day, even thinking to bring me a pre wedding drink to ensure I was hydrated during the day. James was so thoughtful in asking our wishes for things I wouldn’t have thought of, like how high a disco ball should be hung. My sister was married here in October of 2023 and it could not have been a better place for them! The property of The Mill District is so unique and well kept. This truly makes for a special experience for weddings and guests. The variety of historic buildings gives couples countless options to make their day special while also having great alternative options for rain plans!

As a wedding photographer and cinematographer team, my husband and I couldn’t help but take a few photos with the lovely early morning light, and capture some of the property with a drone flight. Between the buildings, fields, lovely trees and scenery, there is no shortage of beauty to be captured and your wedding photos will surely agree! (Especially with the stunning fall colors in October)! We can’t wait to make a trip back to The Mill District hopefully to capture some lovely wedding days!

Having the cottage and post office as spaces for the bridal party is an amazing perk to the property. Each place makes for a lovely getting ready area and there is ample space (and light)! for a hair and make-up crew for the gals in the cottage.

Throughout the day, the venue team was there to help quickly with any needs and make sure everything ran smoothly! Most of the time, we had no idea they were even there as clean ups, trash removal, and set up for different areas, and much more all happened so smoothly behind the scenes.

We do not have the words to adequately describe how much we LOVED our experience with The Mill District. From the minute that we stepped foot on the property, we knew that it would be the perfect venue for our special day. Wedding planning can be such a challenge, often making it feel as if the day is about everyone attending rather than the actual couple being celebrated. At The Mill District, Jourdan and her staff ensure that your special day is quite literally all about you - as she works diligently to bring your exact vision to life. We felt an immense amount of support during every stage of wedding planning. Whether it was the initial choices of choosing vendors and themes, developing timelines, or the final moments before walking down the aisle as she supports you and provides you with confidence and encouragement. Because of this team, it felt as if our day was flawless. The perks of choosing The Mill District are endless, but some of my favorite things included having TMD staff decorate for us to take a little extra off our plates, being able to have our rehearsal dinner on site, being able to stay on site with some of our favorite people throughout our wedding weekend, having the opportunity to include our dogs in our ceremony, and feeling the utmost support throughout the entire duration of our wedding planning.
