We visited the "Fielding Garr Ranch" in March of 2022 and we found it really interesting and well worth checking out if you are in the Salt Lake City area! The ranch dates back to the late 1840's when Fielding Garr was sent to live on Antelope Island by the LDS Church. They established a ranch to manage the LDS church's Tithing Herds of cattle and sheep. A portion of the original ranch is now listed on the "National Register of Historic Places"! What remains of the original ranch is comprised of a number of farm buildings that were vital to the people who lived here. Considering the harsh conditions that they had to endure here in the 1800's the site was very self-sufficient! The old homestead house is really interesting and the interior is preserved just as it was down through the years. The barns are open to the public and I would recommend that you walk around the site. Some of the equipment that the ranchers once used is housed in open stalls with a fantastic view of the lake and the mountains! The blacksmith barn and workshop barn are full of tools and examples of what they used in the past while operating the sheep and cattle ranching operations! I believe there are guided tours offered of the ranch however, there was none available at the time that we visited.
Overall: I highly recommend taking a the trip from Salt Lake City to visit Antelop Island and the Fielding Garr Ranch. Its a great place to bring kids to take a glimpse into the pioneering past of...
Read moreThis is such a cool and unknown gem in utah! It's a hit of a drive to get to it from the north side entrance but we'll worth the drive for the avid museum goer. What I love about this place is that there is almost no overnight! Come on in and touch the antique pieces get close to the historic past of this ranch! The amazing part is that it's still a functional ranch! Starting in 1848 all the way to 2021 they still have horses and other animals. I suggest going to the large open barn first and picking up a brochure that explains the history of each site you can see. Then select the best orator in your group to be the designated tour guide for the group and give the history of each building! Then when the heat of the day starts to get to you go check out the bird conservatory under the planted forest on the south east side of the property for a cool leisurely walk. Then have a nice picnic in the designated picnic area under the trees on the south side by the entrance. The bathrooms as well were very clean and smelled good as soon as you entered the door. Great experiance for the...
