The bridge to nowhere In the middle of nowhere. Glad we were able to find it, which indeed resembles the Golden Gate Bridge. The McPhaul Bridge was built in 1929. The Consulting Engineer, Ralph Modjeski, was considered America's greatest bridge builder. He trained the chief engineer, Joseph Strauss, of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Beautiful Bridge, it should be maintained and allow foot traffic to really be able to enjoy a state treasure. Everyone should contact Yuma, AZ, or AZ Gov to get this bridge protected and maintained. It's definitely worth the trip if you are within a 30 min radius.

You not allowed on it anymore but it IS interesting because it was a practice bridge prior to the Golden Gate Bridge. It looks very similar but smaller. It does lead sonewhere, to the firing range, but now you you have to drive all the way around to get to it instead of uses the bridge. If you want to see the other side ofvthe bridge, drive around to the firing range and on the east side of tje bluff there idva break you can walk through yo the bridge. If you are into engineering then this is a must see along with the Coast to...

The bridge was originally called Dome Bridge. It was constructed in 1929 and opened on December 18, 1929. It was designed by Baerman Strauss who also designed the Golden Gate Bridge. This bridge design was used to test design stress and construction methods. They were used for the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. In the 1960’s Hwy 95 was moved to its current location. At 798 feet it’s the longest suspension bridge in Arizona and is still State...

I actually drove my '59 Chevy Pickup across the bridge before they actually closed it off. It was late at night. Once I drove across the bridge I made a u-turn and noticed a sign that stated "Bridge Out." Go figure. I believe the bridge was the prior crossing over the Gila river to continue driving down Hwy 95 to Dome Valley and on to Wellton. It's the old road that enters the Gunnery Range. Cool...
