Nice and quiet a beautiful with plenty of trails and if you have a fur baby, there are bags for little or big droppings at the trail entrances. There is also a pond where fishing is allowed.

On a side note; Make sure you lock up your vehicle and pay attention to your environment.

I have been there when it felt like me and my vehicle was being watched. There was a person of questionable motives (definitely not there for working out or walking) and a man who was pretending to fish whilst watching me come down the path. Both parties seemed to be talking to each other on their phones and when passing, because of being within ear shot, the man in the parking area said into his phone, "He's headed your way." I didn't think anything of it until the pretend fisherman got on the phone when I passed him and he said, "He's coming back to you now." And sure enough, when I could see my vehicle the parking lot walker was walking briskly away from my parking space.

All this took place in the early afternoon hours, on a weekday and there were only 2 other vehicles besides mine. 🙄 it might have been nothing and I may have overheard two different conversations that had nothing to do with me or my vehicle but you should always be aware of your surroundings.

Happy New...

Just on the western edge of Arlington, Texas, near Kennedale, this small preserve has very nice walking trails and several ponds where you can do some catch and release fishing. The southeast corner of the preserve is a high-elevated knob that forms a shelf of red rock. It's the perfect place to rest or picnic and while looking over the treetops at a beautiful view of Fort Worth in the distance. The main trails are well defined, and it appears that there are more trails in development. There are three or four ponds where you can fish, and my son and I caught several Bluegills around the pier of the southernmost pond. The water was fairly clear in all the ponds, and we could see several fairly large Bluegills lazing around weed beds in the largest pond from the shore. When I took my family yesterday (mid November), the park was very clean and well maintained. If you want quiet family time in nature and live in around Arlington or eastern Fort Worth, but you don't want to drive too far or pay a mint for entry fees, give this nice little preserve a try. There's plenty of nature to see, and fish to catch...

Wonderful park! I have been here almost every Saturday for the last 4 months. Great place to go hiking for a mile or so. I love all the different plant scents and animal sounds in the early morning. I've seen garden snakes, an armadillo, a lil ' baby skunk, frogs, dragonflies. This place just teems with life. The dirt trails are way better than dead concrete paths in other parks. Preserve looks really nice too. I take a picture of one of the ponds almost every time I go here, I can't help it lol (really should stop tho, I probably have at least a gigabyte worth of pictures and videos at this point). As it is a nature preserve, you aren't going to find a restroom or water fountain here, so come prepared! I always go alone, but people bring out their dogs here all the time too. Also if it has rained recently, I would not recommend coming out here unless it's to take the short concrete trail to a fishing dock (catch & release only). That mud...

I took my toddler on a hike here and it was perfect for her. The loop around Kennedale Mountain (yes, mountain, the sign says so) was about a mile according to my Garmin. Elevation change was ~60 feet so you get a little workout in but it's not too strenuous. And hey, you get to say you summited a mountain. ;) One thing that needs improvement is better trail markers. Only one trail had arrows indicating direction and the arrows weren't labeled so I had no idea which trail I was on. At least it's small enough that if you get lost you'll stumble back across the right path soon enough. Overall it was a great little adventure and I'll be taking my daughter back often.

The Southwest Nature Preserve is an excellent place to take the family for a little nature getaway. It is located on Bowman Springs Road in Arlington near I-20 and is open daily from 5am to 10pm. There are three ponds located on the 58-acre preserve, as well as loads of hiking trails to get lost in (remember to bring your Google Maps to actually find yourself lost). Within the preserve we found a snake and tons of turtles in the southern pond, a lizard near the parking lot and a small frog along the trails. All in all, the family had a blast hiking in this preserve.
