I've been coming to Sandy Point for nearly a decade now — with family and friends.. Every visit offers something a little different, but there's a comforting familiarity to it that keeps drawing me back.
First off, let me say how incredibly convenient the location is. Just off Route 50, right before you cross the Bay Bridge, Sandy Point is close enough to D.C. and Baltimore to make for a perfect day trip, yet far enough removed from the chaos of urban life that you feel like you've stepped into another world. The drive in itself is scenic — trees flanking either side, and then suddenly the wide-open water greets you like an old friend.
There’s a nominal entrance fee per vehicle, but for what you get, it’s more than worth it.
The beach is the obvious main attraction, and while it may not be a tropical paradise, it absolutely holds its own. The view of the Bay Bridge in the distance is stunning — particularly during sunset, when the entire sky turns shades of orange and lavender. The sand is clean, the water is shallow near the shore, and it’s usually calm enough for kids to play safely.
I’ve brought my nieces and nephews here many times, and there’s something timeless about building sandcastles, jumping over small waves, and hunting for little shells or smooth stones. On more than one occasion, I’ve found myself just sitting there with my toes in the water, watching the boats go by and realizing how lucky I am to live within driving distance of such a peaceful place.
One of the things that makes Sandy Point so unique is how perfectly it balances nature with convenience. There are shaded picnic areas, well-maintained grills, pavilions you can reserve for larger gatherings, and plenty of open space for games and relaxing. I’ve hosted a couple of family reunions here, and the combination of beach + picnic + calm water always hits the spot.
The park has a playground for the kids, and clean restrooms that, while not fancy, do their job just fine. That’s more than I can say for a lot of parks I’ve visited.
More than anything, what I love about Sandy Point is the vibe. It’s not loud or flashy. It’s not over-commercialized. It’s just... real. The sound of the waves, the smell of salt in the air, the warmth of the sun on your skin, and the constant gentle breeze off the bay. Even when it’s crowded, it never feels stressful.
It’s a place that lets you slow down. And for someone like me — constantly juggling work, life, and everything in between — that’s priceless.
Here are some tips:
Come early, especially on weekends or holidays. It fills up fast.
Bring your own shade or tent, as trees are more available in the picnic areas than on the beach.
If you want quiet and solitude, visit on a weekday or during the off-season (early fall is lovely).
Don’t forget bug spray if you’re staying past sunset — this is Maryland, after all.
The nature trails are short but worth exploring. Peaceful and easy...
Read moreHello All . My initial review was on May 18, 2025. I'd like to do an addendum to my initial review. On Wednesday, May 21, 2025 - I placed another call to the park to inquire about my sentimental item lost during my May 18, 2025 - visited to the park. I'm so glad I made this additional call. A very helpful young lady Ranger Melissa, took the same information I'd provided to previous Rangers regarding the lost item. Melissa looked for the item (which I don't think happened during my Monday 19, 2025). Melissa left a message with Ranger Emily informing her that she had in fact located the item. I was simply elated! Emily informed me the park office headquarters isn't open on the weekend and that to retrieve the item, I would have to pick it up during the work week anytime between 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Say less! lol! I was on it! I picked up my item today, FRIDAY, May 23, 2025. Thank you SO MUCH Melissa and Emily! Now, this is going to sound sexist. But I knew in my soul that a woman would take to heart the sentimental feelings I had for this item (which I shared in my narrative to them - as well as the gentlemen). Women get it! We just GET IT! Much kudos ladies! And have a great holiday weekend! **Hello, on May 18, 2025, my family had a large family reunion at this park. We had a great time. The ranger who assisted us with the logistics was very helpful. I can't recall her name, but she was located at the part of the park leading to the Flounder pavilion. She was extremely detailed in her information and represented the parks accessories and features in an appealing fashion. The grounds of the park were pretty well kempt, and the women's restroom facility was relatively clean and had adequate supplies. The water and beachline were free of clutter and debris. My only caveat occurred on the following day, (May 19, 2025) once I noticed I'd misplaced a sentimental item and had to contact the park to report its loss. During my INITIAL call, I spoke with a rather helpful gentleman who sounded interested in my concern and made his best attempt to assure me he would look for the item and follow up to my phone call. Unfortunately, I missed his return call to me. Once I returned the missed call, I was "assisted" by a different gentleman who identified himself as "Curtis". As it sometimes happens, the second gentleman, Curtis, wasn't nearly as interested in my concern as the first gentleman. Well, at least he didn't sound like. To the contrary, he sounded rather bothered and annoyed by me. However, he did take down my contact information (which I had left during my INITIAL call) and told me he'd call me, in a not so reassuring manner. As I stated earlier, the item is sentimental. It belonged to my deceased mother, and it was unique to me. Hopefully it didn't grow legs or get washed out in the waters. Great time with a not so...
Read moreHad an amazing day at Sandy Point State Park in Maryland with friends—it's the kind of places that instantly relaxes you and sparks great conversations.
The vibe and scenery Wide skies, salty breeze, and that quintessential Chesapeake vibe right along the water. The beach and treelined picnic spots offer instant get-together energy, making it perfect for a casual hangout or a spontaneous adventure. It-feels-friendly, low-key, and just the right amount of scenic to make every photo look effortless.
Fun things to do with friends Beach and water play: Sand between your toes, a quick dip, or a friendly game of frisbee—easy to dive into without fuss. Trails and overlooks: A few short, scenic walks with great viewpoints for catch-up conversations and quick photo moments. Picnic time: Plenty of shaded picnic areas and tables. We packed snacks and shared dishes, which turned into a laid-back feast with everyone contributing. Sunsets and serenity: If you stay into the late afternoon, the light off the water is magical and totally worth sticking around for.
Facilities and convenience The park is clean and well-maintained, with clear signage and accessible amenities. Restrooms are nearby, and there are convenient spots to refill water and grab a quick bite. Parking is reasonable, and the open layout makes it easy to find a cozy corner to set up with friends.
Tips for a great day Go early or later in the day to beat peak crowds and catch cooler, softer light for photos. Bring sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water—it’s sunny and there’s lots of open space. Pack a lightweight picnic or easy-to-share snacks to maximize chat time rather than food hunts. Check the weather and wind direction for best beach conditions and a comfy breeze near the water. If you’re planning a longer hangout, carve out a couple of “quiet” spots for deeper conversations away from the main activity.
Bottom line Sandy Point State Park is a prime spot for a friends day out—effortless fun, scenic beauty, and easygoing vibes that make teamwork and laughter flow. Perfect for a laid-back beach day, a post-work chill session, or a weekend escape with your crew. Highly recommended for anyone in the Baltimore-WaltMaryland area looking to recharge, reconnect, and enjoy nature with...
