If you're looking for a challenging and scenic hike not too far from Sacramento, look no further than the Cardiac Trail at the Auburn State Recreation Area. This out-and-back trail lives up to its name - it drops steeply from the parking area to the river, getting your legs and heart pumping as you make your way down and back up to your car.
The roads and trails themselves are well-maintained and easy to follow. Give yourself plenty of time since the elevation gain will slow you down. Make sure to stop at the attractions along the way - old mining equipment, side trails, and benches to rest at - which makes for a nice rest stop and photo opp.
The feeling of accomplishment when you finally reach the top, or bottom, is so satisfying. Take time at the river to soak both in the incredible views of waterfalls, canyons, forests, and mountains in all directions, and your tired feet!
