Horse Guard State Park is on 107 acres of land and established in 1964. The name came from the First Company Governor's Horse Guards. They were a calvary unit founded in 1788 and is still active today. They are deemed to be the oldest and continually operating calvary in the US.
The parking lot can fit about 4-5 vehicles. The entrance is narrow and only one car and go in and out. There is a sign at the entrance and it's right near the historic Derrin House.
There is a small kiosk at the white trail entrance. It is a 1.5 mile out and back, white blazed trail. At the end of the trail, there is a rocky hill that you can climb up to look at the views of the south and west. I was with my toddler and wearing my other toddler so I was not able to climb up. Next time, I'll have my husband go with me so we can take turns watching the kids as one of us do a rock climb up to see the views.
The trail was easy with a slight incline. There were some rocky and rooty spots so be careful with tripping. Overall, a fun hike and I look forward...

It had remained relatively unchanged since its acquisition in 1964. 🌲Now thanks to local scouts and volunteers there is a small parking area with a legitimate trailhead. The trail here is an out and back from the parking lot to the ridge overlook that’s about 2/3rds of a mile one way (though the sign at the trailhead says .41). There is also a connector to Wyngate Drive that adds about a half mile, but isn’t worth exploring.🌲 The rocky climb to the ridge is a nice surprise and the overlook provides an expansive view west. 🌲History:Established as a park in 1964, it is named for the...
Read moreA nice short fairly easy walk ( around a half mile one way from parking to lookout) With a great rocky outlook with good views. The hiking itself is moderately flat until the last steep scramble to the lookout. The only real turn off on this hike would be a few swampy areas where you'll have to cross carefully on some makeshift branch/ log crossings to avoid shoes full of mud and with those wet areas come mosquitoes. Overall though it's worth the...
