We travel. I mean we really travel, a few months of the year. We are writing a book on doing the national parks on a budget. This was such a disappointment. Maybe you are doing the Mormon Trail and this is an obligatory stop. Fine, do it. We have been to Register Rock in Nebraska, kind of cool, and El Morro National Monument in New Mexico, not to be missed. At El Morro they have inscriptions from conquistadors, pioneers, natives, and Army officers going back to the 1500s and before. Ones you can still read. Independance Rock is a few plaques and some illegible scraping in the high desert. I understand it's historical significance, but you bring your children here, get ready to hear drawn out B-o-r-i-n-g. With due respect to those faithful pioneers who died in the westward expansion, there is a reason they died here. There is nothing in the area but rocks, burning heat, roaring blizzards, and sage brush. Few live there even today. A dry rotted wagon wheel would add interest. So the fact that messages were carved here to those that would follow is not surprising. The traveling companies would hunker down here to get out of the wind. People would scrape a quick note in the Rock. Most of those have been sandblasted...
Read morei am so proud to say ive been to this place. its a mythical site. i passed by here once before back in june 2020. then finally on march 2021 i actually stopped here and this day was special because the cows were hanging out by the rest stop and also it began snowing when i was walking around. took some out of this world spell binding photographs of this place and videos. this is a pivotal location full of majestic beauty and surreal radiance of life. i have a strong feeling there is an energy vortex here also. there is absolutely no cellphone service for roughly 80 miles surrounding this area. im just guessing based on what i recall vaguely about distance (was a long drive) and also only 3 gas stations spaced out between this rough distance. this place reminds you how vast and epic the country is. this area is one of the few parts of this country where if you dont realize how much gas you have in the tank you just might end up stranded with no gas in your car and also no cellphone service to...
Read more!! AMAZING natural site with a great & important visible & tangible part of American history that can rarely be as clearly observed & experienced by all. Highly recommend to all!
The only negative I would mention is: worst placement/orientation of main welcome/introductory sign that I've ever seen at a historic site(only with regards to photography/viewing). If you want to capture both the sign & Independence Rock in a well-framed photo, the sign becomes difficult/impossible to see, whereas when the sign is clearly visible and well-framed in a photo, it obstructs the view of Independence Rock itself. All it would take would be to angle the main sign more and/or a second copy of the sign could even be folded & doubled up on the other side of it with a better angled orientation, or sign could even be elevated much higher above on a type of giant entryway that would also nicely frame Independence Rock below it. Will fixing its placement ever...
