This is one of the must-do hikes along the BRP just for the views it offers. It is short (less than 0.6 miles to the summit) but moderate difficulty. You could complete it in less than an hour depending on how fast you’re doing it. The parking lot can get full really fast - I went around 8:30 am on a Friday morning, and it was almost full. The hike mostly involves making your way through rocky and wooden steps and stairs, and it offers three overlooks - the first one is along wooden stairs and offers great photo opportunity, the second one is the most iconic, and the third one was disappointing imo.

From the lot you can actually see the creek and the wooden bridge. Starting the hike, you’re treated with the Tanawha Trail sign. Follow left at the marker that says MST (towards Linn Cove). You will be greeted by a wooden bridge soon. From here the first overlook will appear in less than 10 mins (about 0.3 miles from the parking lot). The views from here are absolutely stunning. I did it during peak-fall and the colors took my breath away. You can see the Linn cove viaduct and Grandfather Mtn. from here. The second overlook is iconic - the one you always see in pictures. Be a little careful here but views are again amazing! The summit overlook needs you to hike further up but doesn’t offer anything extra except getting you closer to Grandfather Mtn., and I felt it was a...

This is one of the places with mesmerizing views. Couple of things to note here are This place is after curvy road in google maps The parking lot will be full most of the time during weekend , don’t worry you can park at roadside as there is little extra space (make sure the mirrors are just closed to avoid hit by any passing cars) Once you start trekking you will get confused as it is not written about path to rough ridge but there are other places mentioned so just continue trekking towards your left which crosses through a small wooden bridge immediately and that is the way for rough ridge During rainy season the path will be muddy and slippery so better wear shoes with grip than sandals and sneakers . That’s it and get ready for...

Rough Ridge is a rocky outcrop running south from Grandfather Mountain with fantastic views. There are actually several overlooks along a beautiful boardwalk trail that stretches over 200-feet. Do stay on the trail to avoid damaging the ecologically sensitive areas that make this place so beautiful. The boardwalk is part of the Tanawha Trail, so there are many ways to access, but the shortest is from the Rough Ridge Parking Area at mile post 302.8 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's under a mile from here. If the parking is full, as it frequently is on nice weekends, the next closest is Wilson Creek Overlook at mile post 303.6. It's about 1.4 miles from here. My last visit was on a cloudy day so couldn't see too far, but the fall color was...

Bucket-list guide to the Blue Ridge Parkway: my favorite, can’t-miss stops along (or right off) this epic US road-trip! 📌 𝘚𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘉𝘙𝘗 𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘥-𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘱 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘥𝘰𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘺 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘴! ✨ Note: there’s obviously much more but I could only fit so many within one reel. Thus, I had to narrow it down to my all-time top recommendations (which was super hard to do). 🍁 Leaf peepers > these are FANTASTIC for chasing gorgeous fall colors soooon!! Starting from north to south… I absolutely encourage you to make these insanely amazing stops on route: ⛰️Shenandoah NP’s Skyline drive which is considered the gateway to the blue ridge parkway! One of my fave quick hikes to a stellar viewpoint here is Bearfence! But there are SO many to choose from! 🪨 Natural Bridge (at Milepost 61.6). 🌳 Mabry Mill (Milepost 176) 🌄Rough Ridge is a must! Especially at sunrise!! (Milepost 302.8) 💦 Linville Falls (Milepost 316.4) 🥾 Also nearby are these three beautiful hikes: •Upper Creek Falls •Grandfather Mountain •Hawksbill Mountain -because there’s so many of my favorites in this area of the blue ridge parkway, I recommend staying the night (or two) nearby! ⛰️Mt Mitchell (milepost 355.4) 🌄 Watch sunset at Craggy Pinnacle! (Milepost 364.1) 💦 Graveyard Fields (Milepost 418.8) 🥾Art Loeb / Black Balsam Knob Trail (milepost 420.2) 🌲Devil’s Courthouse (Milepost 422.4) 💦 And not too far off the parkway is also Looking Glass Falls, Sunburst Falls as well as sooo many more waterfalls!! ⛰️Richland Balsam (Milepost 431) and Waterrock Knob (Milepost 451.2) 🐴 Hemphill Bald (fantastic way to end your road-trip: ESPECIALLY horseback riding with Cataloochee Ranch) 🔚 and of course, you’ll finally reach: Great Smoky Mountains NP! ‼️Always remember to practice all the Leave No Trace Principles - help protect & preserve these places! 👉🏻To see more spots to explore in WNC > check out my past guide pinned to the top of my reels tab. 👉🏻 I also have content with much more info on each spot mentioned above (hiking distance and level, etc). There are so MANY incredible hikes along the BRP, I’d never fit them all in one reel. This is really just to say that if you haven’t been or haven’t spent much time here, you need to change that asap! I have many more still on my list, but the ones I’m sharing are surely among the best ☺️ Have you driven or hiked along the Blue Ridge Parkway? [Save this for your trip] North Carolina: 📍1. Grandfather mountain 📍2. Mount Mitchell 📍3. Rough Ridge 📍4. Crabtree Falls Virginia: 📍5. Humpback Rocks 📍6. Apple Orchard Falls 📍7. Sharp Top 📍8. Ok, I cheated a little. You really can’t go wrong anywhere. That last clip is from Black Mountain overlook in NC, which was amazing on a cloudy day. ⚠️ Help keep these places beautiful by taking nothing with you, leaving nothing behind, and staying on established trails. ➡️Follow @krismariawanders for all things outdoors!

Located on the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC, this short hike is a must. From multiple overlook points, you’ll get epic views of Grandfather Mountain and Linn Cove Viaduct. Even on a moody day, it’s gorgeous. What do you think? Am I the queen of darkness, or did I edit in this effect? 📸 Thanks @andreafcannon for the cover photo edit! 📍Rough Ridge hike 👉🏼Pisgagh National Forest, NC 👉🏼You can access the boardwalk and overlooks quickly from the parking area (Milepost 302.8) or you can extend your hike by taking the Tanawha trail (which is what we did). 👉🏼Another .5 miles beyond the boardwalk is Rough Ridge Summit. ✨Recommendation: visit for sunrise! *This is a popular spot, so it’s likely to be busy. Also make sure to check for parkway closures before heading out! ⚠️With fragile vegetation, it is incredibly important to stay on the trail. Please check where pets are permitted! ➡️Follow @krismariawanders for more epic hikes! . . . . #appalachianmountains #appalachian_explorers #wnc #blueridge #pisgahnationalforest #ashevillenc #ncmountains #blueridgeparkway #boonenc #blueridgeoutdoors #mountainviews #blueridgemountains #blueridgemoments #visitasheville #northcarolina
