That there have been inventions developed Right here that ppl use today, all over the world! The Wright Brothers were friends, acquaintances & business associates of the other inventors of that time! Kettering developed the Starter for the automobile (or we work all be standing outside in front of our cars cranking it around& around! LOL) Charles Kettering had many other inventions! Patterson, Just one of his inventions was the cash register and from that computers were invented! Grimes invented runways for airplanes & all the lighting u see inside & outside and on runways on airplanes,! My father was stationed here at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, ]hHe retired a Colonel there and then he went on to be the director of Engineers at Midland Ross, Grimes Division!! Read moreI am glad I was able to take a bicycle ride along the Huffman Prairie bike trail to this spot, which is arguably far more significant than Kitty Hawk in the contribution to aviation produced here. If you haven't already visited one of the visitor centers, it may be more informative to visit the great rangers and exhibits at the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park visitor center by the Wright Memorial, on a hilltop west of here.
While here, admire how the National Park Service has done a wonderful job keeping the area as historically accurate as possible, down to a rebuilt hangar for the Wright Flyer's nightly storage. It is quite exciting to recall all the hard work that was performed here, the failures, corrections, and eventually many successes. It is also interesting to think that you are standing in the same spot where the first machine to fly continuously was stored, the Wright Flyer being another character in addition to the brothers in the story of the birth of flight. The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is nearby, showing the legacy that this place started a bit over a century ago.
I saw an aircraft, faintly visible, flying high in the atmosphere over this area, and it gives a sentimental feeling for the progress that we as humans have made over the past century. It also fosters a sense for the humble beginnings and an urge to protect a sustainable path to the future to share this with many more...
Read moreThis is an interesting place, hidden from easy view, but open to the public everyday. It is the ONLY location where the Wright Brothers learned how to make an airplane controllable, thus useful, over the course of two summers, in 1904-1905. It is a National Parks site, with a replica hangar and airplane catapult at 100% size, about a dozen National Parks signs are sprinkled around to explain the history. The greenery is preserved, so watch out for ticks! Don't come to picnic, come to get a feel for true aviation history! You should be fine if you stay on the paved walking and driving portions. Before coming to Huffman Prairie, the Wright Brothers were able to make an airplane fly but ONLY in a straight line for about 10 seconds. After practicing for two summers, they could stay flying for over 40 minutes, in circles and figure eights. Huffman Prairie was a cow pasture where one of the Brothers had come for a high school field trip, over a...
