📍Maine Maritime Museum and Cruise — Bath, Maine 10/10 recommend booking one of the cruises operated by @mainemaritimemuseum for a fantastic experience. We booked one that focused on lighthouses (intentionally not shown in this reel 🙃) and it was fantastic! Your cruise booking will include admission to the museum, so give yourself plenty of time to explore the museum premises before the cruise, as there is a good chance the museum will be closed once the cruise is over. #mainemaritimemuseum #mainemaritime #rivercruise #thingstodoinmaine #maineactivities #plussizetravel #maine

I've struggled with the thought of reviewing this museum simply because I don't find the subject matter interesting enough, which isn't the museum's fault. Every corner of this place is immersive, educational, relevant, and thorough. We were a little disappointed in the historical boat collection - for some reason, we thought there would be a little more substance and story behind the boats featured. Something else we found disappointing was the lighthouse light. You can walk right up to it but you can't go inside. You would think in a controlled environment with such an emphasis on immersion that you could be permitted to go inside the light, especially since its located just off the watchful eye of the attendants and curators, numerous in the lobby. Shrug. Since most visitors to the Maine coast will see lobster boats and the fishermen working, you might be interested to see the lobstering section of the museum. The wall of buouys is a work of art in itself. Even if you dont go downstairs, go in the stairwell and check out the random lobster ephemera. It's like they knew these things belonged here, somewhere, and didnt know where to display them, so they stuck them in a stairwell. So in this stairwell, you have clippings of Lobsterman (the superhero) comic book, lobster tail corset patterns, and all sorts of lobster miscellany. It's kind of a hoot. If you love all things maritime, you will absolutely love this place, and that's its aim, so for that reason, I'll give it 5 stars. Definitely leave the kids at home; if you aren't into boating and nautical history, there is little for you here.

We had an amazing experience on the Autumn Lights Cruise! We capstoned our honeymoon with this experience. We did book ahead of time, and we’re thankful we did as it appears to have been full. Although we did not partake, there were light snacks and refreshments (including coffee) available for purchase. The crew were kind, friendly, and informative. They shared local history, landmarks (of course focusing on the river lighthouses), and wildlife. We feel very fortunate that we were able to see 2 eagles, countless seals, and many other waterfowl! The seals were so cute popping up and checking out what us tourists were doing! The fog rolled in and we were worried it would ruin our views but actually cast a really cool vantage point over the river! This hopefully a helpful tip - our cruise docked and we left the museum around 5:45 so we just recommend accounting for a little leeway around the 5:30 end of cruise if you’re making dinner reservations. We didn’t have dinner booked until 7:20 so we weren’t in a rush! We talked about doing another tour with them on subsequent trips to Maine! Thank you so much!

We recently visited the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine, primarily to see the US Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyers under construction at the nearby Bath Iron Works Shipyard. The boat cruise, which is purchased separately from museum admission, was incredibly well-organized and featured excellent narration. However, I urge you not to overlook the museum itself—it’s a fascinating glimpse into America’s rich history of wooden shipbuilding, particularly in this region of Maine. That said, the boat tour is undoubtedly the highlight of the visit. It offers a unique opportunity to view the destroyers at various stages of construction, something you can only experience from the water, as the Bath Iron Works Shipyard is a secure facility. For anyone interested in naval history or shipbuilding, this tour is an absolute must.
