So, I found out about this little zoo when I was looking for something to do for the day. We were going to be in Michigan, but the event we were attending wasn't until later in the day. A small zoo seemed the perfect way to kill a few hours. I read the reviews and there seemed to be a lot of fans. The negative reviews had me a little nervous though.
Right off, I noticed the smell in the gift shop/check in area. Very strong smell of pee. It's a zoo, but I've never noticed that in the gift shop. I wanted out of there and into the open air, fast.
Once outside we saw the chickens and rabbits, which were cute, and headed for the monkey enclosures. How small their cages were, depressed me. Now, I don't know what the area behind the enclosures was like, they may have a lot of room out there. Each cage had a tunnel they could go through to leave the cage, and most cages were empty. The one that wasn't had 2 monkeys that sat by the bars, looking rather forelorn. Yeah, I'd be bored too. They did have a tire swing and a ladder to climb.
The sloth house was dark and not much to see. The kangaroos all flopped on their sides. The few who did move, moved slowly.
When we reached the goats, donkeys, (mules?), camels, and giraffe, my kids were excited. I thought I had read that this was a petting zoo, but there as no way to pet them, as they were in an enclosure you couldn't enter. We fed the goats and donkeys through the fence, but the only petting area was the nose as they stick it through the fence, (except for one large goat who seemed to want to climb the fence,) and if you went with them with your hand, you had better have a carrot in it. The giraffe we didn't get to see, as it was on the other side of it's yard and there was no way around that didn't say employees only.
There were a ton of flies and throughout, the smell of urine and feces was overwhelming. My kids love the zoo, but in this case, they asked if we could leave. That was not a problem, since it didn't take long to walk through. I think we were there an hour.
I am gibigi 3 stars because I get the feeling the owner is trying. It looks like there have been some upgrades. Most of the paths were paved, just not down by the goats. That was Stone and difficult to walk. I feel sorry for anyone who may have difficulty trying to walk it. The paved path ended right there, so perhaps an upgrade is coming there. There were several exhibits in the process of being built. And I read somewhere that some of these animals are rescues. Maybe in a few years, the place will have adequate improvements. My biggest peeve is the encloaures. I love seeing animals at the zoo, but my favorites are where the animals have room to...
Read moreI usually never write reviews, but the mistreatment of helpless animals is not something I can stay quiet about. Please take into consideration all of the other one star reviews before visiting this zoo, they are truthful. I am absolutely baffled on how anyone could rate this place above one star. It does not even deserve one star.
I was recommended this zoo by someone, and without doing my research beforehand to see if they were an accredited zoo, I decided to take my kids for a day trip there. We hold Toledo Zoo memberships yearly, but thought we would check this place out.
While touring this zoo for nearly two hours, only one employee was ever spotted throughout the zoo. The animals are clearly neglected and ill. Their enclosures are insufficient, extremely too small, not maintained, no environmental enrichment. All of the birds have EXTREMELY curled feathers, which is usually caused by nutritional deficiencies and disease, and feathers too long to walk properly. An alligator was in one small exposure in direct sunlight, with barely enough water to even cover its legs. They have two bears enclosed in one small cage, with hardly anything. The Macaws are balding. All of the deer are massively balding and some even bleeding. The wolf, bears and other animals were showing behavioral disturbances by continuously pacing.
This is a privately owned zoo. I noticed their personal home on the property was currently undergoing renovations, while the animals continue to go on without proper care. This zoo needs exposure and to be shut down. It was also filthy with trash all over the place , no directions around the zoo, and no bathrooms seen, except for the gift shop. There was also no place to even buy a beverage throughout the zoo, or a water fountain. The temp was 86 today and you cannot bring in any outside food/drink.
These animals do not deserve this. It also appears that the owner is looking to expand the zoo and bring in more animals. This zoo was expensive and also has a gift shop. The money is clearly not being spent on proper veterinary care or on any adequate care for...
Read moreWhile the zoo staff were very kind and helpful some of the animals seemed neglected and this whole place gave off a “tiger king vibe” The enclosures were small and lacked enrichments all seemed home made. There are loads of half finished projects and empty cages. Some communal animals were alone. One goat was off in a pen by himself begging for attention and food. The wolves looked underweight and unwell, we watched them get hand feed and were told they eat two lbs of food once a day. The alligators pound was tiny, barely had any water in it and it was fluorescent green. There was also a pond with gold fish also fluorescent green with barely any water in it. My son kept asking what was wrong with the monkey because he sat in his little enclosure with his head on his knees, it was really a sad sight. We made the best of the day, but we will never go back and I’ll tell others this place isn’t legit. The deer were cute as were the chickens and goats. This “zoo” really shouldn’t be able to keep the exotic animals im shocked they hadn’t been fined or shut down. It cost my family $90 to come and it took us less then 2 hrs to walk the entire zoo. Please save your money and go to the Toledo zoo. Im sending a letter along of pics to the state in attempt to help the welfare of the...
