Awesome Huge lake west of Temple and Northwest of Belton. 136 miles to walk the entire shoreline! Lots of fish in this lake and tons of beautiful parks. RIP little Sparta, Texas - flooded along with Aiken, Bland, & Brookhaven to create the lake. But this area of Central Texas will be one of the last places to run out of water in the next hundred years. Never mind the bad reviews - there are literally hundreds of places to go on this lake. Read moreLake Belton has much to offer. Along the shoreline are numerous parks with varying amenities. Most are free to visit. Most are open year round but not all. I rarely ever see boats out on the lake, so it's mostly uncrowded especially when it's not Summer. There are miles and miles of cliffs and shore to explore. Be prepared for some sounds of mortar from Fort Hood at times. The Army is often out training. So, it can be a little disconcerting to hear bombs exploding nearby, but it's not a given.
