Imagine stumbling upon a secret forest, untouched by loggers for centuries. Lost 40 SNA in Minnesota is a hidden treasure, its old-growth pine forest a testament to a fortunate surveying error.

Originally mistaken for a lake, this stand of red pines escaped the axe, growing undisturbed since the 18th century. Some of these magnificent trees are over 200 years old, their towering presence creating a truly awe-inspiring atmosphere.

Explore this unique ecosystem, home to a variety of wildlife and breathtaking natural beauty. Lost 40 SNA is a must-visit for nature lovers seeking a peaceful and...

Gorgeous old-growth pines and a very nice trail.

Be warned: the route most hikers will follow is to take the east path closest to the parking lot, then follow the trail loop counterclockwise and take the west side back. About halfway along the east side going north, there is an unmarked spur trail. This is not an official trail! It is well-tread and looks like a real trail, but it is not and should not be confused with the official spur trail at the northern tip of the loop that goes to an overlook and bench. Look for a map at the official intersections before...

Nice outdoor area for hiking and other recreational activities. Its a bit of a drive to get to but worth it, especially for historic value.

  • warning * This area is quite remote and cellular reception is pretty much non-existent for all four major US carriers (as well as no-contract providers who merely lease towers from other carriers). One would be advised to save the area to offline maps or pay close attention when driving in, as navigating out of the area did not work for me and my wife till we were back on highway 46 (at which point I already knew how...

The Lost 40 is such a beautiful resource! I cannot believe there is still some old growth forest left that hasn't been completely logged for profit. The trees are so massive, towering above like old giants, watching silently and the world changes around them. The trail is a bit short, only about a mile or so, but it is definitely worth visiting and maybe for the best that the majority of the area is less accessible. I would highly recommend visiting if you get a chance !

It's definitely worth the stop, but it's definitely a little over hiped. You almost expect the trees to be bigger. Short easy hike through a small forest of old growth pines. Cool, very tall pines, but not much more significant than those at Scenic, McCarthy Beach, Itaska, or Charles Lindberg state parks. It is one of those places worth doing once, but you're probably not going back unless you're in the area.
