The Ionia State Recreation area, in which you'll find Sessions Lake, is the hidden gem among Michigan's state recreation areas!
If you enjoy hiking, biking, or horseback riding through a mix of forests and meadows, I don't know of a better place in southern and mid-Michigan. There are miles of near wilderness hiking, equestrian, and mountain bike trails. Some beautiful ponds and wildlife await, if you are willing to explore on foot.
There is a great rails-to-trails riding and hiking trail connecting Saranac and Ionia (and beyond!) running along the northern park border, which parallels the Grand River. A nice campground for tents and RVs with two separate grounds for campers with horses. There is fishing, swimming, and (no wake speed) boating in the smallish Sessions Lake--which is quite nice. I often kayak around the perimeter of the lake. It's beautiful!

   Read moreI've been going to Sessions Lake since the mid 1980, before it was even set up as a state park and shortly after the lake had fully formed. (It's a damned creek.) I adore this park. The lake is clean, there are loads of hiking trails, decent fishing. 2 rustic and 2 modern cabins are available to rent, the modern cabins located right on the lakeshore. They were scheduled for 3 hours and they were too worn out to even go out for their third hour. It is in the State Park, so you need a pass which you can get at the park for $11.00,or if you have the $10.00 endorsement on your car plate you can get in any State Park for free...
