We went on June 12th. The Rhododendrons weren't blooming yet. It's an easy, relaxing, well-marked hike, though. This wooded, out and back lollipop trail takes you uphill to a ridge, then pretty much levels off the rest of the way, although the surrounding terrain is very hilly, and there are cliffs, and cool views. There are actually two loops in the trail - one in the middle of the trail, and the one at the end. From the beginning of the trail to the first loop, the trail arrows are yellow, and the tree markings are orange. If you continue past the first loop, the arrows and tree markings are blue. Coming back is downhill after passing the middle loop. There are other pretty wildflowers along the trail, really cool looking rock formations, and cliffs. Read moreBeautiful hike! The parking lot is inconspicuous -- I actually passed by it initially and had to turn around. There's no bathroom, so be prepared, but Wahkeena is right nearby if it's open. I would rate it easy. There's a steeper part at the beginning/end that'll get the blood flowing, but it's not too difficult. There are roots and rocks that can be a tripping hazard. Trekking poles aren't necessary but may be helpful for the steeper sections if you have knee pain or if the trail is muddy. Kids can manage, but there are a couple places near a ledge, so be sure you trust them to listen and mind the gap. Even in August when the rhododendrons were well past peak, the trail was still green and beautiful....
Read moreRhododendron Cove is a place that has been showing up on Pinterest for hiking. I was surprised when I arrived and started up the trail. I would say it was moderate because it is a little steep getting up the hill and there was still some snow on the trail. I didn't expect to see the rock formations and scenery. Rhododendron Cove is just a short drive from and on the same road as Wahkeena Nature Preserve. I definitely would like to come back and see what it looks like when the Rhododendrons...
