My husband and I were able to secure a last minute upgrade to the parlor car. I am glad we did. We were enjoying an anniversary weekend together and the parlor car was definitely more relaxed and we enjoyed not having young children riding in our car. Had we been on the regular car we also would have had a nice time - but again, the quieter parlor was appreciated. The ride is nice, slow enough to look around and appreciate the views. Lunch is nothing fancy- a couple baskets of rolls and breads and a few trays of lunch meats with bowls of lettuce, onions, pickles. There was a salad and also a fruit salad. Beth, the hostess has a big personality and likes to engage with everyone in the train car. She has a homemade potato salad that is delicious. This is all on a bar area and there was a collection of condiments and salad dressings. I made the perfect roast beef on rye! So, while not fancy - very enjoyable. The stop at the waterfall is nice and feels great to get out and move around. Be careful as the rocks at the bottom of the stairs make it easy to twist an ankle or fall. Those with mobility impairments would not want to walk to the lowest level. The complimentary wine and desert is not delivered until after the stop at the falls which is understandable. But unfortunate, as our table was one of the last to be served and we only had about 15-20 minutes to have wine and eat our (delicious!) pie. If taking teens or children I would definitely recommend to bring some games/activities- because looking at trees and ferns captured my attention -but not all ages will feel the same. I did see one family with a tote bag of board games and thought that smart. I did bring snacks - but never needed them as lunch was large enough and leisurely enough that I never needed more. The conductor Tristan, hostess Mary and concession car attendant Stretch were all kind and engaging. We felt truly welcomed and loved talking with each of them. It is the people that make it truly special. If you go - seek them out and strike up a conversation! We absolutely enjoyed ourselves and recommend this train excursion to...
Read moreWe had reserved our tickets in advance in the Parlor Car for the New Tygart Flyer train ride to visit the High Falls of the Cheat. The lady at the counter in the museum was helpful and pleasant. Beth was our Parlor Car hostess. She attended to our every need and more. Her descriptions of the scenery were helpful. The lunch she served was beyond our expectations. The announcements over the loud speaker for all the cars regarding scenery were helpful. The High Falls stop was beautiful. If you don't have children under the age of 12 and can reserve the Parlor Car, I highly recommend it. The décor was great. The restroom was convenient in the same car. Our return trip allowed us to watch the back of the train move through the tunnel and around the bends. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Elkins which was a great hotel with a wonderful view. Dinner at Maggies in downtown Elkins made our whole...
Read moreThe Greenbrier Express over all was good. Me and my family of 8 went with a 3yr old. The tickets were a little pricey at 98 bucks a piece. There is no cell phone service in the area. So be prepared with activities for your little ones. They do have some coloring books and simple board games. The stop at Durbin was actually pretty cool. The lunch they serve should be better than cold cut sandwiches for the price you pay to ride. I do recommend getting the ice cream its delicious. You have an hour to tour the town then back in the train. The ride back the train does a 3 point turn so your seats will be on the opposite side you rode down on. The ride back seems slower than when you started but its a slow ride either way. The train might...
