Big Cherry Reservoir — Attraction in Big Stone Gap

The drive up Big Cherry Rd is crazy! It's an insanely bumpy, skinny road with steep drop-offs. Be prepared to lose service, so have a map loaded if you might need directions. No signs indicating where to go. I don't recommend it for anything but a truck or jeep. Our van was burning break pads by the time we got back down. There was not much up there. Big Cherry Reservoir sits atop Powell Mountain, near the town of Big Stone Gap. Most of the surrounding area belongs to the Jefferson National Forest. Very pristine, and what few people journey there typically go to fish. No motorized craft allowed on the water (and no swimming). One may observe deer, turkey, beer, and beaver.
