We arrived when there was a storm in the distance. My husband went in to purchase tickets. He asked the older blonde lady how long the storm would last. She said maybe 5-10 minutes. We are from Texas and deal with storms regularly, so 5-10 minutes of rain is no big deal. It started raining on us as we walked up to the first cave. The cave was exceptionally unimpressive. You can’t see anything that used to be there. It started raining heavily, then hailing and rocks came from over the top of the cave. We ran for the parking lot and the hail got worse. The park staff sounded a siren. We went into the office to let them know about the rocks and got chastised by the older lady for even going up in the first place! If she had said it wasn’t safe and to give it 10 minutes to clear, we would have waited it out.

Also, if you’re in an RV, maybe reconsider! There are 3 RV spots. If anyone had been parked on either side of us we couldn’t have gotten out of the parking lot! As it was, we were inching our 40 footer out of...

Regarding the Response from the Owner

I must agree with Jessi J. You completely disregarded the gentleman’s complaint which definitely DOES show a strong disregard for your visitors, disabled or not.

Your knee-jerk defense is childish and appalling. Obviously, you need to learn customer service skills. Would it have been so hard for you to practice good customer service by first, acknowledging that he was unhappy with his visit and, second, vow to do better in the future?

“I’m sorry you experienced a negative situation at the park. We respect all of our guests and you can rest assured we’ll be speaking with our people about how to provide better customer service in the future. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.”

THAT is how an adult deals with the public, not your childish lashing out at someone that may have a valid complaint. I will NEVER visit your park and it’s...

The hike up to the cave and the overall scenery is good. However, you can not visibly see the pictograph markings with the naked eye from where you are allowed to stand. I had a zoom in camera and still couldn't see them. They have red drawings from wba workers but these are in no way prehistoric. Especially because the color red was rare and beetles were often used to make it. Stay on the trail to avoid rattle snakes. Also the National Park clerk was in no way friendly or informative. She did not greet people coming in and she continued to stare at her phone which was probably more interesting than this Park. The landscape is vastly picturesque. Birds nesting in the caves above adds to ambiance. Trails are not designed well for disabled access and if you have bad knees the hike incline would not be...

Fascinating scenic/historic State Park off the beaten track. I ended up in Billings with a few hours to kill, so I decided to check out Pictograph Cave State Park. It's quite a small venue, but an utterly fascinating one. The visitor center contains a display detailing the site's history of human habitation and providing an insight into the archaeological excavations carried out here. The path up to the main cave is only about a quarter of a mile long, but it's quite steep. All on all there are three caves along the one mile loop trail, though only the main one holds any pictographs. Pro-Tip: If you're walking the whole loop, the "Un-maintained Trail" is actually a much easier as well as scenic way of getting to the third cave, than the main path.

First off, if you're on a motorcycle, be aware that there are some blind curves on the road leading to the visitor center. The road itself isn't in the best condition, but I've seen worse, so just FYI. Overall, this is a pretty nice state park located in Billings. The visitor center has a small gift shop, nice toilets, and a few displays of artifacts on display. The caves themselves are nice, but I could only see three pictographs and the signage indicates many more. I can only assume that they've simply succumbed to the elements and aren't visible anymore. The park itself is nice with some nice rock features surrounding the area, so that's a nice bonus. This park is definitely worth a stop if you're in the area or passing through.
