On Spetember 9-10, 1876 where Crazy Horse & his 600 warriors came to help American Horse & his band of Miniconjou Sioux, Crazy Horse’s mother’s people (Miniconjou women were notorious for being voluptous & having lighter colored brown hair amongst the darker haired bands of Sioux, which caused a lot of jealously, which Crazy Horse also was born with) that had been attacked by the U.S. Army as they were on their way to Spotted Tail Agency. They battled General George Crook in a muddy battle here at Slim Buttes. American Horse was severely wounded here & refused treatment from Army surgeons & soon eventually died...
Read moreThe Battle of Slim Buttes is one of the very few battle fields in South Dakota. Slim Buttes was a post Little Bighorn battle. The field is almost pristine. Nothing is there but the a flag, monument, and a marker. It is worth visiting if you are in the area or an history buff. It is also located near the Reva Gap Campgrounds and the beautiful "Castles" rock formations. Both of those are never crowded and well worth checking out and very close to the Slim Buttes...
