Overall we had a good experience with SpinDrift. The prices are reasonable, Krystal, one of the workers there took care of us and was really sweet. You can rent sleds and boards, as well as goggles. They will explain how to use boards and sleds, as well as how to roll off the sleds. We were having a lot of fun on the dunes, unfortunately though, my girlfriend went a little too quickly down the hill and broke her wrist. The sleds and boards can both go very fast down steep slopes (they mentioned a top speed of 45 mph). The key difference between the two is that a board is easy stop on, especially if you snowboard, but a sled is not. They tell you to roll off into the sand, but it isn't as instinctive to do, especially at high speeds. Flying down a hill and rolling face first into the sand just isn't as easy to commit to as you may think. Sleds are fun to use, but recognize you don't have nearly the control you have on a board. It is important that you practice trying to "roll off" before taking a steep slope where you suddenly can't stop or get launched into mid air like my girlfriend was. I would still come back here and rent from SpinDrift, but I don't want anyone to accidentally injure themselves and just want to spread awareness that things like this can happen. I really wish that the inability to stop the sleds at all was more strongly emphasized by the store, but I don't hold that against them. If you snowboard, you should have no trouble...
Read moreI cannot praise Spindrift Sandboards, and Amy, enough! I messaged via google after hours and swiftly received a response. Amy was willing to reserve boards for me in advance, so I wasn’t stressed about whether or not any would be available that weekend. When we arrived to the shop, Amy was enthusiastic and so wonderful when teaching my kiddo (5 years old) what he needed to do with the board. Amy waxed the boards for us before we left, and also gave us two pucks of wax so that we could wax the boards while we were at the dunes.
When we dropped off the boards, Amy remembered our names (which is huge for me!) and asked how we enjoyed our day. Above that, Amy took the time to actually speak with me and we had a wonderful conversation! I can tell that she truly cares about everyone who walks into her door.
As for the boards, the boards were sturdy and 100% worth getting when visiting the sand dunes! We so had SO much fun!
We will...
Read moreWow, can’t say enough great things about this place. Drove in from Dallas through NM and now here in Alamosa, CO to enjoy the great sand dunes National park. We called a few places on this Tuesday afternoon, one place was closed and the other place had a busy line. Panicked cause we were scared we wouldn’t be able to rent anywhere, we called here and hearing Amy pick up the phone just brightened our day - we were in business! 👌 She said she would take good care of us and she definitely did and also, what a sweet soul she is! The drive isn’t that far to Blanca, CO about a 25 min drive from Alamosa. When we arrived, she explained what we needed as beginners, made us feel confident and also waxed our board and sled for us. When we come back, we are coming here to rent our sand boards and sand sleds! Thanks Amy and...
