Spring time brings new adventures! Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge brings new adventures to all ages. The Auto Tour presents Wildlife, abandoned historic army production buildings, open lake access, and many hiking trails to explore. When exploring the many acres of the Wildlife Refuge, be sure to stop by the historical marker and pick up a map that is close to the entrance. There are road signs, but few in between. Note: If you do take the hiking trails, please note that there are no signs or markers on the trails. Inside the visiting center has stamps to stamp your Texas passport. As of the abandoned buildings, there is only one marked on the map that you can explore. If you are a photographer, this makes for a great place to get a few poitrait pictures, with nature taking over the abandoned buildings. If you have children, be advised that there are well vats that your children could fall into. Some well vats have not been covered, making it a potential danger to younger children. Other than what I have listed, there is not much else to do, but stop by the Caddo Lake State Park for a visit. It is only a mile north up the road with much more to do with the family. Not only many activities, but also the enjoyment of the landscapes with Cyprus trees cascading with Spanish moss and the river to...
Read moreLoved this place. It's huge, and there are tons of areas you can just walk around and explore. It can get a little confusing though. To get to the main abandoned WW2 factory, just type "6th st" into your GPS once you're at the wildlife refugee. It will take you straight to the ruins. You can see them from the street, and there is a large sign there as well.
Also, make sure to go down Starr Ranch road... the end of the road is absolutely gorgeous, and there is a really cool kayak and boat launch, and hiking trail.
There are SEVERAL buildings you can explore, hiking trails, etc. I could spend weeks here and not see everything.
Oh yeah, to get to the bathrooms, take the road to the left as soon as you enter the wildlife refugee gate, you will see bathrooms on left side. I'm not sure if the visitor center has them, as no one was there when I went. Highly recommend. The ruins alone...
Read moreVery cool place! And huge. Lots & lots of different places to explore. The Observation Center is closed still due to Covid, we are really looking forward to coming back & exploring that when it opens back up. There is a little place right beside it that actually usto be the old guard shack. It has a lot of information on animals & the history of the place. There was a cool place to bird watch that we unfortunately didn't get to experience because of all the wasps!!! We plan on coming back this winter though to see that & explore everything even more. Today was our third or fourth time out here & we still haven't seen it all! You are able to walk some trails, ride horses & even bicycles on certain trails. This is a very unique & interesting place to explore & have fun in good old mother nature! I will come back to add some really cool pictures...
