We had a bit of trouble finding the turn off for the trail and cell service was spotty in the area but we eventually found it. Turn off the main road before the kiva parking lot, remember to purchase your permit ahead of time if you don't have cash on you, and the gravel road is a bit rough for any lower riding cars. A few of these reviews mention how easy the hike is and some mention that's its sandy in a few areas. The hike itself is fairly easy (nothing technical, little to no elevation gain), but it is almost all sand, which in my opinion makes the hike much more difficult, and there is little to no shade depending on the time of day you go. All that being said I do think the hike is very worth it, I was very pleased with the pictures I took, it really does look like fire with the right lighting, and we had the whole place to ourselves for the hour and a half we spent there(only ran into one other group on their way out at the beginning of the trail), but I don't think i will be doing this one again anytime soon because I hate walking in sand.

This was a very fun and family friendly hike. My 4 year old really enjoyed finding “big” rocks to climb. It was very easy to follow the trail (or the wash). Mostly flat with some small hills when climbing in and out of the wash and a steep, but easy climb up to the actual site of House on Fire. We didn’t make it during the time in the morning that the sun lit it up like fire, but it was still amazing. You can see from the photos how the streaks coming up from the dwelling would look like flames. The location was pretty unbelievable. GPS (Google maps) took us to the wrong location for the trailhead, so do your research before going because there’s very little cell service out there. It’s a small dirt road off the highway. You pay the entry fee, then continue on down the dirt road to the actual trailhead.

Use the Arch Canyon road. It's a dirt road off the 95. Go about 1/4 mile to where the stream crosses underneath the road. Small trial marker for Mule Canyon trial. Using your watch or phone, follow the stream exactly 1 mile. It will be about 30 feet above the stream on your right. Easy to see from the stream. Climb up and explore. Don't see how anyone could have slept there, more likely just used for food storage. Only one other couple seen. Very quiet, relax and ponder. June 19th 2025 at 8pm, I highly suggest bug spray. I wasn't able to get there at sunrise, but that is the time to see how it got it's name. It's not Mesa Verdes by any stretch, but it's quite and an easy hike.
