A wonderful roadside stop along Rt 52 in the“ find your heaven” state of West Virginia. Ample parking area with old stone pavilions for picnicking. There are three trails that can be accessed from this end of the park, the more popular overlook and falling rock trails are short and gain access to vistas. The Homestead trail will access other intersecting woodland trails which some will lead to Jimmy Lewis Lake. It’s a substantial out and back hike to lake so pack a lunch if taking this one on! The overlook trail vista is pretty cool! It gives you a birds eye view atop the massive rock structure that draws your eye along Rt 52 and once in parking lot. The vista overlooks more of cascading mountains of the Blue Ridge mountain range and even on cold days the trees are releasing enough isoprene to reveal why and where its range name was derived from! I know..isoprene..google it..it will enlighten...
Read moreOn our way bac home to North Carolina from a weekend in West Virginia meeting family for UTV and dirt bike riding, my wife and I stopped at this state park to stretch our legs.
Located between Bluewell and Bramwell along U.S. Route 52, Pinnacle Rock State Park which is in Mercer County includes a 3,100 foot tall sandstone rock formation that shares a name with the park. While it might be one of the smaller parks in the state, the park still offers stunning mountain views.
There are many things to be enjoyed at the park, including picnic areas, a picnic shelter, a playground, parking areas, and hiking trails, one of which leads to an overlook near the top of Pinnacle Rock.
We didn't have a long time to explore as we were wanting to get back on the road to continue our trek back home but I'm glad we made the stop. An interesting place for...
Read moreThis place is a nice walk. It is a little steep, but it's not a challenging walk ( can be done by a woman on a cane ). From the parking lot the trail to the overlook is on your left by the blocked off paved road. Go up concrete steps in back of parking lot towards rock building. Halfway up steps trail cuts to left. Follow signs and enjoy the view. At the top there is a place where you can jump over hand rail and follow a path on the right to see a small cave. Almost to the top of wooden stairs look right and you will see the well used dirt trail. I do not really recommend to trail around the back side. Its steep and pointless. No good views and it runs from main parking lot to smaller parking lot. It is behind the swings in...
