Ample (free) parking to either explore the fort or enjoy the beach. Beautiful panoramic views out into the ocean and over to Beaufort. After parking, we went into the information building to check out the exhibits (half is about the area wildlife and the other half is relayed to the fort's history. We then walked into the fort's interior (self-guided tour, not sure if rangers offer guided tours). There a doors you can open to learn more about the specific rooms, their function and daily life for a solider. When then walked up the steep stairs (hold on children) to explore the upper portion of the fort. There are a handful of cannons and their is a view of the beach and out into the ocean. There are a few sunken/hidden rooms that appeared to be for storage of other functions but otherwise do not recommend walking around the middle interior section (grass). There are tons of mosquitoes and they'll swarm you. All in all, it was nice to walk around the...
Read moreThis place was AMAZING!! ESPECIALLY if you love History!!! Even if you don't it was still really cool and has a BEAUTIFUL panoramic view of the ocean up on top of the fort! Almost all of the exhibits have audio(even outside!) It is a big Fort to walk around but it goes directly in a circle so you can't get lost 😆 The only thing that I wish they had was either MORE DIRECTORIES or That they had MORE SIGNAGE that was OVER the tunnels (not just on doors)to tell you what is there. Also... I understand how the fort was built HOWEVER... Getting up to the top of the fort is almost impossible for someone who is handicap or someone like my dad who walks with a cane 😕... I don't know if maybe you guys can build a wooden ramp off of one of the ramparts or something like that to be able to get up top as a suggestion, but I totally understand the reason behind not doing it for preservation purposes! Other than...
Read moreIf you like war history and looking at artifacts, you will love this place. The last time I visited Fort Macon was over 20 years ago and things have changed significantly. I was expecting a raw historic visit but parts have been renovated to include a number of exhibits. The exhibits provide visitors an idea of what it felt and looked like when the fort was in use. As the signs say, “Fort Macon was made for war, not safety.” Please watch your step and your children. While 80% of the fort is safe, I stumbled across two areas that were wicked-dark. These are perfect spots for you kids to hide and then jump out to scare you silly. There are additional exhibits in the visitor’s center. I visited at the beginning of December which might have been the best time. There were very few people roaming the exhibits....
