A winery within an hour's drive from downtown Boston? This must be too good to be true. Well... it wasn't. The place itself, wine aside, is awesome. It's scenic, very well maintained and clean. That being said, our experience there left us expecting a bit more.
We easily found the place and parked, walked over by their tiny little pond and proceede right into the store. We purchased 2 tastings for $5 each which cover 5 different pours. Most pours will only count as 1 but since they've now expanded into beer and spirits, some of their finer or stronger libations will count as two. Just keep that in mind.
The wife decided to try five different wines, some better than others but I decided to change it up a little and get some diversity in there. I went with a couple of red wines, which were mediocre at best and decided that I'd change it up and try a couple of their beers which were actually, to my surprise, pretty damn good. Not amazing by any means, but they were good beers. For my last pour, I decided to try their grappa which wasn't very smooth and frankly pretty terrible. All in all, beer aside, not a great showing. I definitely was expecting better quality wines and spirits.
The staff behind the counter was friendly and the wine bought a bottle of white wine which we took outside to hang out in their lawn-area which features a few tables and picnic tables overlooking the vines from the top of the hill. It's gorgeous and the grounds are very well kept. Can't finish your bottle? Not a problem, they'll put a temporary cork back in and package it for you so you can drive home and finish it later. That was kind of awesome.
So while the tastings are affordable, the staff both friendly and knowledgeable, I still felt very underwhelmed when it came to their wines. I didn't like the couple that I sampled, and I also tried a couple that my wife had and didn't find anything I liked. There just seemed to be a lack of depth of flavor in their wines; something missing somewhere. They aren't terrible but certainly aren't good. On top of it, there's a real branding issues. All of their labels for their wines and beers are really ugly. Not that it affected the taste or anything but it definitely doesn't help the way they are perceived. Having their kids draw the beer labels while fun, isn't exactly a good idea; The labels are hideous. (Sorry!)
But that being said, Nashoba can still be a lot of fun with friends or for a fun, little date. You can bring your own food and snacks and enjoy some beers or wine outside on a gorgeous day, and that's definitely something that I'd consider doing next summer. With that said, just don't expect any high...
Read moreI rarely post negative reviews but we went to Nashoba winery on Sunday thinking it was the same as 2019. We thought we could buy wine and sit outside and have a picnic. We were scolded when we went to drink the wine we bought from them (from their own store) and told to order online through the restaurant by scanning the barcode on the table. So we did... We bought three more bottles and tipped 20 percent for someone to drop it off with plastic cups lol. Then we tried to eat the food we brought in (they used to allow this) and we again got rudely scolded and told they will take our food away if we eat it. UM ok. So I kindly asked if they had anything vegan since this is why we chose Nashoba, because being a vegan is tough and nobody accommodates, so we chose nashoba thinking we could have a picnic like they used to allow. The rude lady reassured me I would have no issues being a vegan....So I then ordered. I had to modify everything I ordered since absolutely nothing was vegan. I left a 20% tip thinking it was real service. About 40 minutes later I see an alert text to pick up my food. So I tipped to go serve myself and that is when I then learned the Mediterranean plate I ordered cannot be accommodated vegan. It's premade with cheese (um gross)....So the rude manager lady threatening to take food away lied, they cannot accommodate. That would have been nice to know 40 minutes ago. they had my phone number but didn't care to tell me until I picked up the food. I was starving at this point and had to wait for easily 20 minutes for a refund for the plate they couldn't make. Apparently nobody has the power to refund the dish they couldn't make...Long story short nothing is vegan and they changed their rules and is now all about money. I will never go back. Everything that was great about this place is gone. It's now a gross nasty restaurant that you are forced to eat from. The modified wrap we were left with since they couldn't do the hummus plate was pretty gross. My husband and I shared that with a small bag of chips for like $20 bucks...I don't think non vegans realize how nasty your one modified option can be. Taking out the cheese it was just left with a few veggies and no taste. And 40 minutes to learn they cannot accommodate was insane. Then the 20 minutes for the refund I am still waiting patiently to see the refund on my cc. I understand you needed to pivot because of covid but covid is over and it's not cool to use it as an excuse to become a money hungry establishment...
Read moreMy family and I visited the winery this weekend and after driving 45 minutes with a one-year-old and an infant, which we knew would be a challenge, we thought we’d at least be rewarded with a good time once we arrived. Unfortunately our experience was less than that.
Our plan was to grab something small for lunch and head out apple picking. After arriving at about 2:30 and not finding any parking, we followed others who parked on Berlin Rd. We walked up the hill to the winery and waited about an hour in line to order our one-year-old lunch and an additional 25 mins for the food to be ready. In the meantime, Bolton Police arrived in instructed all cars parked on Berlin wall to move. After packing our whole family up and getting back down the hill to move our car, we found a police officer ticketing our car. If we had been notified by staff that we could not have parked on that road it would’ve saved us a lot of trouble. We ended up having to pack both kids are back in the car to move the car and drive around to the front of the winery to pick up our food which by then it was 4 PM. We ate our less than appetizing food in the car live parked since there was no parking and just decided to head back home.
So all in all, we ended up paying $10 for an under cooked pizza, throwing most of it away, getting a ticket, not going apple picking and very cranky kids which in turn makes for cranky parents.
As people who are in the restaurant industry, there are many improvements they could make to make this place more enjoyable and running more smoothly. It is a great concept in theory, but there are a lot of fine details to be worked out, such as, more access to food products and ways to access beer and wine without waiting for hours. Until those changes are made, I don’t think we will be visiting again any time soon and will have to postpone our family apple picking trip for another time at...
