The Red River Wildife Refuge in Bossier City, @ExploreLouisiana is one of our favorite spots. They have fun and educational programs all year long, a visitor center, children’s garden area, interpretive programs, fishing, wildlife watching and over five miles of trails! @Shreveport-Bossier, Louisiana #louisiana #shreveport #hikingtrail #naturecenter #familytravel

This was a wonderful place to enjoy Nature! The Visitors Center was extremely informative and the Lady there very very knowledgeable of the history of the park & was as nice as you could have ever asked for! The grounds were kept very nice and clean and neat. The only negative point and the whole park was the dock which could’ve been easily fixed and was underwater at one point. It wouldn’t have taken much to either temporarily raise it or have built and elevation Doc over it till they could’ve gotten a permanent fix the part that was under water, which shouldn’t have been as low as it was to begin with when the rest of the dock was raised 5 feet higher than the walkway. It would’ve made for a perfect place to sit and enjoy the view or fishing or photography of the wildlife in the area.

I really enjoyed the trail, we went 3 times when we were visiting. There were a lot of birds (hawks, egrets, herons, cardinals, so many ducks and more) on the hike around the lake. I didn’t go inside the visitors center but they do have bathrooms of course. The trail is fairly quiet, not a ton of traffic. The only thing I would suggest is that they raise up/culvert the section that gets water logged. That section is way on the other side so you either have to turn around and go back the way you came or be prepared to get very wet feet. The first two times I went was ok (passable), then the rain came and it gets flooded on that side. If you’re there with your dog, beware of gators at the boat launch.

When I moved to Shreveport 1 year ago, I was looking for a peaceful getaway & somewhere to take my dogs that was more spacious. I like to be outside & in the woods so when I discovered this hidden gem I was so excited! I even introduced my boyfriend to this place and he was born & raised in Shreveport! They have many trails to utilize, a levee, a visitor center with very much interesting information about the SBC area. During the summer, they have many events that teach young people about nature around us and a basic respect for animals and plants and gives them an opportunity to get some hands on experience. They even provide volunteer opportunities. There is an abundance of wildlife, so if you are a birdwatcher or photographer, this place is a must visit. My favorite trail is the Lake Trail by the boat launch. It is the longest at 1.4 miles and goes around Lake Caroline and I believe leads you to the Red River (I wasn't able to walk the whole trail due to the flooding this year). Throughout their trails there are small benches and other areas for resting. Most benches and resting points are overlooking Lake Caroline and make for a beautiful scene near dusk. They have a boat launch for anyone wanting to fish on Lake Caroline, as well as a small dock to fish off of. All in all, Red River Wildlife Refuge is a must see if you live in the area and ever need to get out of the city. It's just a...

The Refuge is such a wonderful Shreveport/Bossier hidden treasure. As a nature lover, a parent and grandparent and a small business owner, I frequent the Red River Refuge in many capacities. My grandsons love coming here and bringing an old camera to photograph nature. The playground is a great place to get out lots of energy and there's tons of great trails to explore. As a small business owner, I truly appreciate having the Refuge this close to "town" and being able to bring clients here. Lots of them have spent many hours here and request this location due to the familial nature, the closeness they feel to the location and how many hours they've spent here. It's a warm feeling to create portraits at a place they hold so dear in...
