My 12 year old son stayed 4 nights at Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See. He is writing the following review: I thought that this camp was amazing and would highly recommend it. However, I do suggest a few areas for improvement. To start off, the property is huge with a campsite and a state park side. It was the land of the Potawatomi tribe and used to be the resting place of the chief of this Native American tribe, Chief Shaw-Waw-Naw-See. The camp is full of culture and has a swimming pool, zip line, gaga-ball pit, small garden, farm, shop, creek, multiple hiking trails and so much more. The zip line is very fun, the pool is well maintained and the shop is well stocked and has very reasonable prices. After that, I would like to state that I was assigned to woodland cabin number 7, one of the newly renovated cabins. The cabin had actual windows, a ventilation system on the ceiling and wood walls. The cabin was recently renovated along with its neighboring cabin woodland 8. It was comfortable, well lit and clean. However, when looking at other cabins, woodland 1-6, the cabins had a window cut into the side of the cabin with a cover that folds over it, unlike a normal window. This seemed to let in quite a bit of bugs and made the cabin much darker. Plus, they did not have a ventilation system and have drywall for walls. Some people in these cabins were not bothered too much by this, but a rather large group seemed to. Next, I would like to say that the counselors were all very kind and helpful. My counselors were Voyager and Shock. I think they did a great job. Especially, one of the councilor in training, CIT Jacob. He did an amazing job always checking on us, helping us go to bed and cheering us up. By far one of the best parts of this camp is the creek. During our time at the creek we got to slide down a small waterfall and wade in the creek with friends. It was so beautiful, calm and fun and we all wished we could stay longer. Something very unclear is that the bathhouse is located at the edge of the woodlands area. Therefore, you need to walk there every time you need to use it. This was not necessarily much of a problem and was a very short walk away. My main suggestion for improvement is inside the bathhouse. The bathhouse is filthy, there are bugs everywhere and the showers and toilets are yellow from age and urine. Some of the stall doors don’t even lock. On top of that, the showers smell of sewage and the only thing that gives you privacy is a thin shower curtain. As I said this is the main suggestion for improvement. If the bathroom was renovated or at least cleaned up, it would make the experience so much easier and pleasant. The food was overall good. The camp meals include mac & cheese, chicken nuggets, waffles, burgers and cereal. Plus, the cafeteria staff was kind and would even give me a little extra since I asked politely. The overall vibe of the camp is friendly. Campers there were open to making new friends and came from many different towns across Illinois. I made so many friends while I was there and got to experience many things that I would not have if I had not gone to Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See. I would totally...
Read moreMy husband I am recently got married at Camp Shaw and it was absolutely incredible! The staff was incredibly helpful and made sure we had everything we could have possibly needed! We had the entire grounds to ourselves for the day and were permitted to enter the venue the day before to decorate and get everything ready the day prior. This made the morning of the wedding so care free! The ceremony spot and the dining hall which we used as our reception hall was stunning! We could not have asked for a better venue experience! They made everything so easy and because you can hire your own vendors, you truly can customize YOUR Day to You! Highly Highly recommend having your next event or wedding at Camp Shaw! It will...
Read moreI just finished a week at camp shaw, and it was the best time of my life! I had an amazing experience with the extremely nice, understanding, helpful counselors, the really fun and interesting camp-tivities, the food (breakfast/lunch/dinner), and the friends in each cabin! Camp shaw is a community, we are a family that is wonderfully close in a bonding way. When you settle in the first day, the counselors make sure you are at home and feel comfortable with your new home for a few days. I would totally come back and camp again next year! I hope new campers decide to join the camp...
