This could be a nice campground and day use area. Unfortunately VT State Parks Leadership has allowed Fort Dummer State Park to become a haven for criminals and drug users. This campground and park are not safe. Within the first month of opening in 2025 there have been two assaults, multiple incidents of heroin and meth use and drug dealing, a DUI within the park(drove repeatedly in and out of the park), a trespass citation, multiple reports of high power automatic weapons being shot, and one of the park managers filed a restraining order against a camper for him threatening to “hit her in the mouth” when she tried to enforce the campground rules. Brattleboro police will not respond to incidents within the park boundary as it’s technically in the town of Guilford. VT State police will not respond to issues within the campground- it took 5 calls to 911 over 6 hours for them to respond to the repeated DUI offenses in the park. VT F&W Officers are over half an hour away and are understaffed. VT State Parks policy states that their campgrounds are not a short term housing solution, but unhoused people have taken over the park and unfortunately, issues such as drug use/sales, mental health crisis, and vandalism has followed. This is not a protest or stand against those that are homeless, but squatting in the park is not a viable solution. Highly suggest not hiking or camping at this location for your own safety. If you like used needles, the roar of highway traffic and sleeping next to felons, this is the...
Read moreI just so love walking around this Vermont State Park. It is kept clean during the camping season has many nice trails, good views, and well maintained shower and bathroom buildings. This camp ground now has sites for RVs along with septic system for RVs. Here you'll also find handicap accessible camp sites. I find that for my handicap needs the sites with the buildings work fine for me. They do have a out building site that is geared towards you who are in need of a wheelchair. Most times I have been to this campground I can go on many of the trails with my rollator. This is a dog friendly campground. It is located just outside of on the edge of Brattleboro Vermont where you can find many sunny and rainy day activities to enjoy. Brattleboro has an abundance of restaurants, local and nationally known artist artworks, as well as a multitude of treasure shops. If you enjoy waterways, Brattleboro offers boat ramps to place your boat onto a great location of the Connecticut River. There are also spots to rent canoe and kayaks for the day. Brattleboro is just large enough to offer many amenities for you to enjoy while being filled with all the charm of a quiet small Vermont town. The people are friendly and seem to be willing to help you find anything you are ed in search of. I highly recommend you do take advantage of this inexpensive camping grounds if you are in search of finding a place offering serenity so you can charge your batteries from the busy days of work...
Read moreThey say Fort Dummer is quiet—too quiet for how close it sits to Brattleboro. At night, the trees seem to lean in, like they’re listening. Or whispering.
A couple from Massachusetts—Amy and Lucas—were camping there late in October, chasing one last weekend of fall foliage. The campground was nearly empty, just them and one other tent off in the distance.
That night, they were sitting by the fire when Lucas heard someone whisper his name.
“Lucas…”
He turned, expecting to see a ranger or another camper—but there was no one.
Then it came again.
“Luuuucas…”
But this time, Amy heard it too.
They stood, listening. The voice wasn’t coming from the campground. It was coming from the woods. High up, as if someone was perched in the trees, just above their line of sight. They shone their flashlight into the branches—but nothing was there.
Lucas called out. No answer. Just silence. Then a giggle, echoing faintly, childlike… but wrong.
They packed up and left in the dark.
Later, they found out a local legend says a child vanished in those woods in the early 1900s. Some say she was never found. Others claim she was—but not the same.
And now, sometimes, she whispers from the trees—looking for someone...
