This place has a lot going for it. Excellent location (about 90 min from Houston, a bit longer from Austin), nice lake, westward view for good sunset photos, excellent trails, large camp site spaces - - length and width, 2 nice boat ramps, many sites where you can bring your boat your jet ski right up to you shore, and a great onsite crew to keep daily things running smoothly.
However, I see 2 major shortfalls. The bugs. The spiders are so prolific they cover the picnic table in webs in 24 hrs. They have plenty to eat. Mosquitos are rampant. This location needs more predators consuming the insects.... bats, purple martins, whatever! You cannot sit outside from evening to mid morning. You will be eaten alive. And don't open the RV door after sunset. You'll never get to sleep with the bugs you let in.
The trees. Or more accurately their exit. Trees are falling all around the park, but I didn't see a single new tree planted to replace them. There's lots of room between the camp sites. At the current rate this peninsula will be bare in a decade (in my opinion). I hate to see parks barren of trees because no one planted new ones... 10 years ago.
You need to act NOW on both of these points.
Apologies for such a harsh review, but I feel like this park is always focused on "now",,,, quite well. But,,,,, they have no vision for the future. If they did, the bugs wouldn't be out of control and I would see new trees of various ages...
Read moreTent camped here with our kids during the month of November; when the temperatures were in the high 40s to the mid 50s and the wind was howling. Upon entering the gate the couple at the front gave us our tags and welcomed us in. There were deer scattered everywhere and we stopped to take pictures. We knew that the first 45 camp sites were closed (from the hurricane I believe) when we booked our site on Recreation.gov, so we chose #185 where the other tent campers were. The site was right on the water and only a few steps from the bathroom so it was perfect. The only thing missing was a tree or two to set up a hammock but there were other trees scattered throughout the loop. We couldnt find any firewood as the store near the front of the park sold out. Fortunately we met a couple of guys that had some firewood stacked up in front of their house, so we followed them and filled up our truck. Glad we did too because what would be camping without smores and a blazing fire!?! Back at the campsite the water was beautiful and we could see nothing but a crescent moon in the starry sky. The showers were clean and the pressure was good so we took a nice hot shower before going to bed. Tomorrow we will try our hand with a little fishing. I highly recommend Rocky Creek Park for your next adventure...
Read moreBeautiful campground. Booth person was helpful. Greatly appreciated since it was our first time here. Grass around campsite was a little tall, but it looks like they're trying to fix flooded areas so workers may be stretched thin. We were here during spring break and even tho there were a lot of people was fairly quiet. Bathroom/shower house seemed reasonably clean. My only complaint was the loose dogs. We had dogs in sites on both sides of us that were never tied up, and their owners never cleaned up after them. Every time we went out we had to watch where we walked and clean up their messes in our area. :( Two rangers stopped to talk with the one site and their two dogs ran out to greet them, so I thought they might say something about leashing their dogs, but they were still loose when the rangers left, and stayed loose until the day they left. So I guess loose dogs are ok at this campground. Other than that we had a great time biking, kayaking and geocaching in the area. Looked like fishing was good as many of the campers were fishermen and were having fish frys. We were even invited over to try crayfish by campers behind us! Very friendly people here! :)...
