Beautiful trail and views...but...beware of all the exposed tree roots. Take a walking stick to help save you before you get your foot in one..causing an ankle to turn. (Or worse) Luckly I was only a short distance, on my way back, to the parking area when one of these nasty roots caught me. A third degree sprain is a real vacation killer. Yes..I had good shoes and am an experienced short distance hiker. I have never seen roots like this on a trail. Needs a bit of fill dirt and upkeep. I saw many seniors on the trail...struggling. I hope none did what I did. Oh..no Porta potties in parking area either. We'll go back but this time...walking...
Read moreLaVerna Preserve is a great place for an easy hike on the shorter side with great ocean views. Trails are well marked, easy to follow, and well maintained. And there are a couple benches if you need a break. Dogs are allowed but on leash. It is suggested that you wear blaze orange during hunting season. Most everyone I saw (and their dogs) had it on when I went. Parking lot is easy to spot and right across the street from the trail head. Read moreLaVerna is an emblematic mid-coast maine hike. Shady, cool woods on a gentle slope lead to the wild, rocky coast with lobsterman islands and sail boats. The trail has lots of hard packed roots so it's not as muddy as it could be, but the counter is one cannot simply shuffle along. Inspite of the fancy foot work, the gentle slopes and short distances put this one squarely in the easy category. Since the pay off is good and it's easy, expect this one to be busy.
