I’ve gone here the past 2 years on the anniversary of my dad’s death to be around animals and start a new tradition! This year was awful. To start, I’ve never seen the enclosures as dirty or filled with flies as I had this time. Additionally there was a very hurt bearded dragon in the reptile enclosure. Its arm was not moving and clearly swollen with what looked like a puncture wound. The enclosure was filthy.
This year my 3 year old nephew was with us and I was so excited for him to feed all the animals in the drive thru section. We have only ever been on the weekends and were only accustomed to picking up the feed at the small kiosk/hut right before entering the drive thru portion. Upon pulling up, the kiosk was unmanned but there were cups filled with pellets directly inside. The signs around the kiosk were very vague if you’ve only been there on the weekends about refills, so we thought we were supposed to just trade out our cups for the ones with the appropriate feed. As we were doing this, a staff vehicle came by and we waved at them and they kept going, so there was no indication of wrongdoing. As we were in the beginning parts of the drive thru area feeding animals, a man on a 4 wheeler pulled up and sat staring at us and I said, “hello!” His reply was point blank in the most cold voice possible, “why did you take cups of food?” I explained that that is how we had gotten food in recent trips and we were a bit confused. He just sat there until I said, “did we do something wrong?” And he said we were supposed to pay at the front. I told him we had on entry and once again explained that there must have been confusion because we had only ever come on the weekends. He replied, “you get refills in the gift shop on week days.” I immediately apologized and asked how much I owed. I also wanted to deescalate the situation because he was really condescending and aggressive and my 3 year old nephew was getting upset over it. I felt bad and embarrassed and refills were only $4, so I offered him a $5. He looked at me and told me to follow him on his 4 wheeler back out of the drive thru. As we drove back through, the staff that we had tried to wave over were sitting there staring at us in disgust. WHY WOULD YOU NOT STOP AND SPEAK WITH US IN THE FIRST PLACE??! WE WERE OBVIOUSLY CONFUSED. Instead it seemed they went and got someone else to very aggressively approach us. I drove back. The man went up to the window were we paid in the beginning and then tried to walk right past me without saying a word or even looking at me. I pointedly smiled and told him, “thank you and I’m sorry again !” He ignored me. I went to the window to pay, the lady was rude to me immediately. She told me I had to pay $12 for refills because we didn’t have cups. I didn’t ask her to give us new cups. We switched out our BRAND NEW CUPS THAT WE HAD JUST PURCHASED for the ones with feed, AND we brought our old ones back from our last visit. She told me because I switched out those cups I had to pay $12. I didn’t feel like arguing and I was honestly astounded at how myself and my family were being treated. They treated us like we were trying to steal from them. We were not trying to steal from y’all. We paid entrance for 4 people, intentionally bought snacks and drinks from y’all, several cups of carrots from yall, and an EXTRA cup from y’all. I’ve recommended this place to so many people over the years. I cannot believe that on the anniversary of my dad’s death during a cherished tradition and with my family, we were treated so poorly over $4… and then we were double charged. Maybe all the terrible people only work during the week? I know I won’t be finding out because I won’t be back and I’ll make sure other’s know not...
Read moreIf I could give this place a zero, I would. To say that this facility is a zoo is truly a crime. I left this place in literal tears for the animals and their quality of life. You can feel the anxiety and sadness from these animals as you walk through.
Their “enclosures” are merely boxes given the size of the animals and the quantity in which they have shoved into these spaces. Their spaces reek and are filled with feces and flies. I expect there to be some sort of smell being around animals but this was over powering and the flies were everywhere. They had music blaring from speakers all around the zoo which was hard to listen to too as a person but I can’t imagine how overwhelming that must be for these animals.
In the tiger habitat their shelter siding is falling apart and has rotting wood. The tiger enclosures are surrounded with barbed wire and the “pond” that they have inside is not clean in any way shape or form. Any “pond” that they had inside of the enclosures were disgusting. The cassowary shelter was caving in and made out of wood, I fear it will fall on the bird.
Multiple monkeys and birds are packed with little to no space to move around. I saw 3 large snakes put into a glass tank with not even enough room for one of them to move around at full length.
They had many baby exotic animals that are clearly being bred and bought just to be put in these poor living conditions. One of the baby tigers was able to pull up the fake grass that they had on the floor and chew on it.
It truly made my heart ache to see these animals and know that this how they live out there days. This “zoo” is a dead end for any animal that enters as their quality of life and spirit will die.
This is an urgent investigation that needs to take place. The people that work there should truly be ashamed for not reporting the owners sooner. It needs to be shut down and stopped...
Read moreI am flabbergasted that the rating on this place is so high. The animal enclosures (90% chain link cages) were incredibly small, packed together, and most had no enrichment items. Just a few things that I saw that were dismaying -
-A monkey cage inside the Alligator pen! -A kookaburra in a metal cylinder cage that was shorter than I am, and maybe 3 feet in diameter. -The tiger enclosures were incredibly small, and basically just had a wooden box in them. The fence looked shorter than the one at the San Francisco zoo where a tiger jumped out a few years ago. Also, there was a hyena area right next to the tigers; only separated by chainlink. -The single giraffe was in a chain link box enclosure, with no trees or enrichment items. -The otter cage had a completely concrete floor. -There were several Macaw parrots in the same cage as fancy pigeons; with ~ 10 birds in a single cage. -Overall, most of the enclosures had no areas for privacy (from onlookers or their neighboring animals), which significantly stresses them out. -There were flies everywhere! Like hundreds on a fence that would swarm kind of everywhere.
This place purports to be an animal rescue that saves animals from abuse and neglect (But they have no conservation/rescue efforts info on their website). If that is actually sincere, then I would heavily recommend that everyone working there do some reflecting; because this was a horror show. Improve the living conditions of these animals. Get an actual accreditation from the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums). Or get out of the...
