(Picture are from my 2021 visit). We went to Lake Brownwood state park to celebrate Godās festival of Sukkot 2024, A week before our trip I called the parks asking if there was anything that would/could interfere with our trip because of the flooding and the closing of the area the week before that. I was told no there was nothing on the calendar for our time at the park. For the first 6 days of the feast we had a great time. All of my children and grandchildren (except Alesha and Taylor) enjoyed the feast. After the weekend was over, On day six of eight we were advised by park staff that the water would be turned off for about 2 hours because of a leak that was created during the winter freezes starting at about noon. The water was turned off at 10:30. So we decided to go into town and do laundry. We returned at 2 and the water leak had not been fixed and the water was still turned off prohibiting the use of the bathrooms and showers. At 4:30 park staff returned to our site telling us that there were more leaks and that the restrooms would remain closed for the night and into the next day. He added that they would offer us to stay where we were and go to the other side of the park for showers and toilets or the park would like to comp us a cabin for the last two nights. I went up to the office and to stay in the cabins park staff expected me to pay an additional $51 a night. In other words to compensate me for my inconvenience I had to pay more money to the park. I decided to remain at my site and we left the next morning. Additionally, we got into trouble for having a BB gun and shooting at inanimate targets. We were told that firearms were not allowed at the park because it was game reserve. I mentioned that the BB gun was not a firearm, that the park did not have the required 30.06 and 30.07 signage prohibiting firearms which the BB gun was not. I then provided my license to carry firearms and he again stated that the BB gun was not allowed in the park and I could be arrested for allowing my child and grandchildren to use a BB gun in the park. Furthermore the co within of the park was extremely below expectations. The crappie dock was closed because of damage. 1/2 of the lights at the fishing pier were not working. Many of the rails in the pier were weathered and deteriorating. The restrooms were filled with spiders, scorpions and other bugs. This park has decreased is quality since my last visit in 2021. I was told by a former employee and a current staff member that many of the parts to upgrade the park as needed but it is not being done. To be fair, I was refunded about $170 of the $500 or so I spent to rent two...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis has always been one of my favorite parks. We have camped here 2 times a year for the last 8 years. We even booked out almost a whole loop and the group hall a few years ago for our wedding. This time we stayed in a shelter because of the incoming weather and it was nice. Very smart idea with the snap on screens. Bathrooms could be cleaner but overall the park is a nice park. They even cleaned up the cow poop we found all around our campsite because of some loose cows the day before.
Because of the rain and the Group next to us partying until 2 am, we were a little late to get packed up. When we woke up, one of our tents was missing and it took us a good 30 minutes to find it. I checked that morning to see if our site was booked to gauge how much time we had to get the water out of our tent/ pack up and it was not. Normally we would be packed the night before but rain. Right at 12, a park ranger stopped by to ask when we would be packed up, telling us we were supposed to be checked out by 12. I asked her if the check-in time was not 2 pm. She told me it didnāt matter, someone else booked the space (didnāt show online) and would like to enjoy the lake. Also there were 7 empty cabins around us. The interaction was not a good one and she needs to work on her people skills. She came across as demanding and condescending, it was not appreciated. Sadly, Iām not sure we will ever return to the park because Iām pretty pissed off about the interaction and Iām pretty sure she lied about the spot being booked. I think we just werenāt moving fast enough to her liking and inconveniencing her schedule of having to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMe and my wife had our wedding at the rec. center in Brownwood Lake State Park. The experience was very good, so I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a venue location.
The rec center has very appealing architecture which looks great on photos. Natural lighting is phenomenal - provided the sun is out of course. Hardwood floors and exposed roof rafters give the interior a "medieval castle" feel.
There are two adjoining rooms and a kitchenette. The main room has a beautiful fireplace and can hold six 6 foot round tables for an event. The adjoining room - although not as decorative, is slightly bigger. We used it as a dance floor and for the cake cutting ceremony.
The kitchenette is functional. There is a great big refrigerator which can hold some big cakes! Our cake was fairly modest and had no trouble fitting. The stove is a regular household item - nothing to write home about. The bar also leaves a bit to be desired, but otherwise everything went as planned.
We planned to have the wedding ceremony in the outdoor area behind the rec. center. We did manage to do this, but I would recommend this as a good option. It was too windy, uncomfortably warm and too sunny, despite this being the end of October. If you're planning a wedding I would advise against using the outside area since you just can't predict the weather on the day of...
All being said, this was a great experience and great memories. Highly...
