As of this writing, this dog park is ONLY for big dogs. There's an extremely tiny fenced-in area for small dogs that has nothing in it but grass - no place to sit, no activities. The day we went, the grass was so high, my chihuahuas couldn't use that area, so we had the rest of the park to ourselves until a few large dogs showed up and we had to leave.
I left a review on Facebook as well, and was told that the small dog area was an afterthought. I was also told that if I want this dog park to change, I should volunteer, that the people who designed and built it did the best they could.
I understand that this park was built and maintained by volunteers who love it very much, but for a dog park this size (probably the biggest I've ever seen, and I've seen many), it's a shame that it doesn't have a larger area for little dogs. I definitely didn't feel welcome there. The fact that the rest of the park was enormous and had activities and benches, compared to the paltry nothing-but-grass small dog area made me feel like small dogs simply aren't welcome there. Big dogs and little dogs shouldn't be forced to play together in public dog parks because the little dogs can be attacked or killed.
Also, most dogs parks I'm familiar with don't have grass, they have wood chips, because grass has ticks, ants, other insects that could harm dogs. Buckhannon is close to Randolph County, famous for lumber, and it would be worth it for someone from Buckhannon to ask for a wood chip donation.
One-fifth or even one-tenth of this dog park could be separated by a chain link fence to make a small dog area. As of right now, the little dog area is at least 40 times smaller than the rest of the park, and that's being generous. It's probably closer to 70 or even 100 times smaller than the "big dog" area, but I'm no surveyor, just eyeballing.
To the Buckhannon Dog Park volunteers: if you can raise the money, or have time, take a few days and travel to a few dog parks in Virginia or Pennsylvania. Use BringFido, look for parks with the highest reviews.
While I wish I could help, like the lady on Facebook told me I should (when I left a "do not recommend" on the Facebook page), I am busy with my own companies, and I live an hour away from this dog park. Please, just take a trip, do some research. Little dogs...
Read moreStumbled upon this place while driving around looking at the WV Wesleyans sporting venues. I was actually driving down to look at the soccer pitch. At first I thought there was no parking but it looks like you can enter from both sides and there's definitely parking after you go past the dog park on the left. Looks like there's hiking trails and looks like it's on the river. Water was working there were water bowls. Look like some people had left some dog toys. Double entrance. Huge. Other than a dog park in Winston-Salem North Carolina I'm not sure I've been in a bigger one. Nice people there. A local nursing student and a local resident. Buckhannon should be proud of such a...
Read moreMy daughter, myself & our 3 dogs really enjoyed ourselves. Our only problem was that the water spigot was turned off & benches were angled so that you couldn't see the field very well. It is a very nice sized park with two smaller dog zones. My daughter & the dogs have gone back. It was very nice. I would like to see some slides, & some opstical courses for the...
