Such a great place. My name is Roger Browning and I am the author of 'The Reckoning of Rance,' that is out on amazon right now. It's a novel about a dysfunctional family of inheritance, its setting that of a Texas ranch. It might not be a story for all, but I am sure that it is a story for most and I so enjoyed the writing of this one as I hope you enjoy reading it more. I am telling you this in relation to the museum, because the writing of the book brought me here. I was on a book signing tour in the area when it was recommended as a place to see. They were right. We drove out, took time for its story. Surveyed the old bullet holes to its fortress walls and enjoyed the cool of the day, even taking in a picnic there while tossing a few loops over the head of a roping dummy that sat the old museums back. We took in the boardwalk store front where I happily browsed the other Texas writers books, and thought about one day my book sitting alongside them there as well. I took a few books there that day, along with a soda pop, some jerky and a desert snack as well. We really enjoyed our time spent and it is well worth the slow down and visit I feel. Take time to hear its story. Imagine the surrounding village at a time it once alive then and there. and enjoy your time in the store and buy youself a good a souvenir as well. My name is Roger Browning and my book is 'The...
Read moreI love historical places. I love to learn everything about history. This place has it. I am giving it 3 stars because it’s really not wheelchair friendly. I have stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. I have lost my right lung so I can’t walk very far. I need my chair to get around. Some of these buildings are accessible to wheelchairs but others are not. Also to get to each building you have to navigate through gravel. Unfortunately my chair kept getting stuck in the gravel and I have a motorized chair. So I had to use power to get unstuck. The gravel is basically lots of sharp rocks it did shred one of my back tires. So unfortunately I wouldn’t call this place wheelchair friendly for those reasons. If I went back I would take my standard wheelchair it probably would do much better than the motorized.🤷🏽♀️ It’s unfortunate because it is a...
Read moreThis used to be a 5* museum, but has obviously gone downhill every since it became the Taylor County History Center. There used to be an audio guide that provided an excellent explanation of the various exhibits. Gone! There used to be an explanation in the Doctor's Office of the "Treatment Room". Gone! The Wagon Barn used to be open. Closed! None of the buildings that are open have any kind of lighting in them, so they're very dark, and it's hard to see what IS in them. I don't know if the original Buffalo Gap State Historic Park had to sell out because they were going bankrupt or not, but the result is a shadow of its former self. Shame on You!!! I...
