It's not very big, but it's cool to know the water is coming up from a flooded coal mine 300 ft down It's said to originally have been an air hole for the mine In times of extended rain it can go over 10ft high, during a drought, no water at all It's 15 ft from the little one car pulloff, on private property. Thanks to the owner for allowing people to check it out There's other houses down this dead end road Hopefully people will show respect or it will end up being blocked off There are short paths on either side that you can walk in a little to get pics from the other side There was a pallet lying partially in the water I thought maybe I do the owner a favor and remove it, but thought it's not my property and maybe the owner put it there for erosion or a...
Read moreI just finished geology and landscapes with my students and I'm out here in the Poconos for a wee vacation. So I had to visit this place, the Centralia vents and Centralia itself. This place is cool to witness. It's off a residential side road, right across the street from private homes, with a little shoulder to park on. I was here on a day where it was spewing. No it's not hot, no it doesn't smell like anything. It's from the pressure build up in the old shafts that have filled with rainwater. Read moreToday we went to see the ghost town Centralia, PA. If you drive on the big run mine road you can still see smokes coming out from the underground fire. Do see the only geyser of PA. Sadly the graffiti highway is covered with landfill but you can still walk and see some colorful graffiti here and there. If you are going towards Ashland that’s south of Centralia then graffiti highway will be on your right. Stopped at the only remaining Ukrainian Church, the bathtub shrine, and at the ruins of the mechanic shop. Interesting place to visit. I wish they had left some more abandoned houses to make the place more attractive...
