The coastline of San Simeon, California is an ecologically diverse wonder. Depending on the time of year, Gray, White, and/or Humpback Whales are visible. All year long, Bottlenose Dolphins hug the Pacific Ocean's rocky coast. Above, California Gulls soar on wind waves. On the rocky shore, colonies of Elephant Seals congregate.
The ELEPHANT SEALS VISTA POINT, especially in late fall and early winter, is a birthing center and nursery for hundreds of newborn pups.
Births generally occur several times a day. A meter long, newborn weighs about 75 lb (35 kg). The pup rests by its mother's side until strong enough to nurse. Seagulls clean up the afterbirth. The newborn will gain about 10 lb (4 kg) a day.
This cycle of life is viewable from a lengthy boardwalk, on the edge of a cliff, which is about twenty feet above thousands of Elephant Seals. Of course, you can hear and smell them. The seals don't seem to care about being observed. Giant bulls, weighing over 8,000 pounds (about 3600 kg), maintain the beach, keeping it safe for their harem and pups. Every once in awhile, these giant animals have a discussion with smaller, younger males looking to take over their harem. After a macho display, discretion takes over. The smaller one backs away.
Informative signs provide information and a Docent is available to answer questions. Portable bathroom facilities are provided.
The Vista Point is a couple of miles North on Highway 1 from the entrance that leads to William Randolph Hearst's incredible castle, a California state historical site.
If possible, couple your winter trip with a visit to the state-owned, Hearst Castle, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when the Docents are attired in period costumes. You'll hear the music of the 30s, view period Christmas decorations and eavesdrop on a sophisticated holiday party.
Admission to the castle is pricey. The gift shop is expensive. But, parking is free. Buses carry groups of visitors up a narrow roadway to the castle at the top of the hill. An audio tour is played during the short trip. After your guided visit, the bus carries you back and drops you at the gift shop. Before boarding the bus, your parties' picture was taken, a copy of which is available for purchase on your return.
The ELEPHANT SEAL VISTA POINT entrance is well marked with signs, along Highway 1. But, be careful, the free parking lot's entrance comes up quickly at highway speed. There is no admission charge.
Reminder: the ocean can be a cold and windy place; dress accordingly. Everything is wheelchair accessible, although the unpaved parking lot can be difficult. A table of reasonably priced souvenirs is displayed. There is a donation box. We left a couple of dollars. And don't forget to bring...

Read moreWe visited the Elephant Seal Viewing Point on September 12, 2020. It is located about six miles North of San Simeon at the Southernmost beginning of the scenic Big Sur Highway. There were a large number of seals snuggled together on a small section of the beach. We saw several swimming right off of the beach but they were mostly huddled together occasionally grunting and snorting and changing their positions. It was fascinating to observe them safely and closely and we were impressed by their massive size. Male seals can reach lengths up to twenty feet and weights of 8000 pounds. We arrived just at the beginning of breeding season and witnessed several large males having skirmishes for territory and breeding rights. There are several nice trails to view the coastline and seals with informative signs explaining Elephant Seal behavior. There were many species of sea birds and the rugged rocky coastline was simply lovely. This is a must stop along the Big Sur Coast! The viewing area is open 7 days a week and there are usually docents available to answer questions. The beach and coastline is rugged and beautiful and offers many good photographic opportunities. There is no admission fee. PS: We visited again in January of 2021 and the Elephant Seals have given birth and the beach is crowded with mothers nursing their cute young pups. Make sure and stop and check out the action during different seasons as the number of seal and their activity changes depending on the...
