I visited Helwig with my wife, we were the only two in the tasting room yet we were still ignored. Any interaction we did recieve was about as personable as a robot. After about half of the selection of mediocre wines they offer 3 women in very nice dresses came in and shockingly enough we were brushed off by the attendant even more than before.

We finally decided we would purchase 1 bottle as a common courtesy, but were completely annoyed when neither of the tasting fees were removed from the price.

To top this awesome experience off, once we left the tasting room we noticed the cellar was wide open with no sign in sight, we walked down the stairs and into the OPEN doors to be yelled at and rushed out, being told it was a private area. It really is a shame they have such a beautiful establishment inside and out, but such an ugly attitude. Wine is over priced, and not even close to the better half of the selections in the area. We live within the county, and frequent the wineries, we make sure to voice our opinion and our experience any time this winery is mentioned. If you enjoy bragging about the amount you pay per bottle I would highly suggest you visit helwig, but if you want enjoyable wine and service try...

Come here to at least check out the view! It's amazing, since you are sitting on top of a hill and overlooking the Plymouth area.

Yes the wines are on the younger side, but I tried out their red blend at an event in El Dorado Hills at Siena and that was enough for me to check them out the next time I was in the area! I ended up buying more of that stuff when I was here: 2009 Round Up Red. I don't remember the cost, somewhere around $10 - $15 or so.

The tasting room has a modern feel to it. Lots of wooden features, drought-resistant landscaping and curving green area. The picnic grounds are sheltered, open air and you can bring your own food, buy a bottle of wine and have a boozy lunch with a view.

While on the smaller side, I don't believe the Amador County area has an outdoor concert facility just yet. I would come here to try it out for sure.

Service-wise in the tasting room, it was pleasant enough. One guy was a little full of himself, but the younger guy (a Flynn lookalike from Glee) was down to earth, helpful and...

Friday, 7/07/2023 - My GFs and I checked out Helwig Vineyards & Winery. Address is 11555 Shenandoah Rd, Plymouth, CA 95669. Upon arrival...

Pros

  1. plenty of parking. When you drive up to the building, go to the right parking lot. The left parking lot is for staffs.
  2. Beautiful winery!! Staffs were very nice.
  3. the back is breath taking.
  4. apparently they have a wine cellar below they open up sometimes for members. But it wasn't open when we went. I heard that it's pretty awesome to go down there.
  5. they have a full menu you can order food. We didn't order foods.
  6. wine tasting is like $10ish per person. I don't drink. But that's what my GFs said.
  7. winery is very clean.
  8. bathroom was very clean.
  9. lots of areas for photos
  10. wines were ok. None of my GFs bought any wine here.

Cons

  1. none

Conclusion Beautiful winery. Lots of outside seating. Staffs were very nice. Lots of beautiful areas to take photos. Plenty of parking when we arrived....

You have to go just for the experience :-) we’re 2 1/2 hours away in Marin County worth every minute of this trip into historic wine country being treated the way that you used to be able to be treated in Napa! Folks appear kind, intelligent about history of wines and our reason for jumping in was there great concert series. Seen Pablo Cruise there twice. and planning on seeing starship in the fall. They really trough this out. It’s a great intimate venue every seats a great seat fun to sip their wine. hit the food trucks and enjoy the music. Their genius in the way that they’ve set up the venue and the processing to get you into the venue. No stress had great interaction with Sam one of their operations guys who really knows his stuff. I think he’s head of their wine club as well as one of their extremely helpful amazing representatives of Helwig. Really appreciated the hospitality.

Gorgeous looking winery with the best views in the area! You can see the snowclad Sierras in the distance and that was my favorite part of it all! We didn't do a tasting, but we got a couple of glasses of wine - the 2018 Petite Sirah and the 2022 Viognier. The wines were good but we enjoyed the winery more. Lots of places to sit and enjoy beautiful views all around. We were able to walk into their cellar and explore the area. For those interested in eating, they have a kitchen serving typical American food. You cannot bring outside food. All in all, we had a great time and definitely recommend checking this winery out if you want open space and views.

We had a great private tasting experience with Leila. Our wine tasting was in a nice private room for our party of 9. We highly recommend it! Leila was a great hostess and enjoyed the wines very much. This is a beautiful winery and the one with the largest seating area outside that we went to in Plymouth. It's modern and new with gorgeous views of the valley below with a lake. Don't forget to order food at their little restaurant and have lunch on the premises. We all enjoyed our lunch. I had the beef brisket sandwich special and it was absolutely delicious!
