This trail actually goes in to Joshua Tree National Park, as evidenced by the small National Parks Service sign along the trail. Payment is not required to use this trail, so you can see some Joshua Trees and save some money. The trail is great, with beautiful panoramic views of the mountains and lots of nice trees and scenery. There is a podium at the top of a peak that has a sort of guestbook you can sign, but unfortunately people think it's funny to draw inappropriate things like in elementary school. Otherwise though it's an awesome trail and well worth it.

Reception and GPS directions work fine, it will take up you towards a campground. Don't be deterred by the signs to register for camping, that isn't necessary if you are just hiking. Just follow the road the GPS tells you to the trail.
