La Purisima Mission in 1787 marked the earliest European settlement in the Lompoc Valley.. The first settlers in this valley were the Chumash Indians nerely 10,000 yrs prior. #chumash #lompoc #california #history #nativeamericans

So heading out to our last home game in Oakland we decided to drive out and make a stop in a Mission or two, or so we thought. Well this is going to be #5 for us now. They do charge $6 for the parking but since it's a historical landmark you can use this parking pass anywhere else you go in California as long as it's on the same day. We made a stop by the visitors center first and got a tour map for a $1. They also have a lot of historical information there, so don't forget to stop by the visitors center. Once you are done there you can start your walk to the actual Mission. Be careful of your surroundings, they do have poison ivy around but they do have signs too so if you have little one's watch their little hands. If you are planning on seeing the whole Mission you will not be done in 45mins, shoot I don't even think an hour covers it unless you plan on running through the whole thing. This one is a big one. There was no way we were going to a different Mission after we were done with this one. Every room here had a purpose and they have it nicely stocked on how it looked back in the day. It's very well detailed. Once you finally finish All the rooms you can walk to the garden, there is a little pathway (where mind you we got lost for a bit, see what happens when you follow other people) that leads you to a very small spot of where the Chumash people were living at. We both loved seeing the history of this Mission, I would say give yourself enough time to go through everything don't rush it. We wouldn't mind returning to do those hiking trails one day. #11 of 21

I am visiting all of the California Missions and all have great history to them. This Mission was completely rebuilt by the CCC up until 1941 and embellished with many of the furnishings and extras as they may have been in the days the Mission was active, including a few cattle, horses, turkeys and many of the plants and trees used. What they lack in Native Chumash village they make up for in a wonderful Visitor's Center exhibit. Having the State Park system take this Mission over was a great blessing. It would not exist otherwise. The Mission is somewhat remote, but very active for school children to visit. There was a busload of 4th graders on a guided tour while we were visiting on a Tuesday. It also has nice hiking trails. I enjoyed an easy .3 mile hike up from the Visitor's Center to the cross on the hill to get the view of the mission and beyond, but saw there are many more trails available. This was my second visit. You have to allow a lot of time and if you want to visit the Visitor's Center or Gift Shop be sure to check opening days/hours before you go. (The picture is of top of the .3 mile hiking trail, just up from the visitors center)

I love this historic mission. I have been to several missions and this one has been much more interesting than others. They have farm animals such as sheep, goats, donkeys, pigs, turkeys, chickens, one bull, two old retired horses and donkeys. When you attend mission life days the whole place is busy with activities of early mission life. You can sample foods, explore the buildings and speak with docents. They do activities which can vary from candle making to hide tanning to arts and crafts. It can get very warm here and there are water fountains. I recommend packing a lunch and utilizing one of the picnic tables around the misson for lunch. There are several hiking/horse trails and a nice mild path that circles around the back of the mission and is about a 3 mile walk. You can see a variety of wildlife here mainly quail, squirrels, bunnies, lizzards and hawks. You may also see snakes, cayotes, bobcat, deer and mountain lion (very rare and usually up in the mountain trails, I have yet to see one in the 28 years of going there.) There are rangers on site and they are very helpful.

This is by fast the best mission I hand visited. It is also a state park which I didn't know. They hand plenty of things to see. They also have hiking trails of you like hiking. They hand animals there as well. Which is always nice. They have 2 donkeys, 2 horses, a goat, some sheep, a long horned bull, 2 pigs, a beautiful turkey and some chicken also many quail. You need to go kind of early or with some time so you get to see the whole mission with time. They have a picnic area and a visitor center which is pretty neat. They also have a quaint little gift shop, you can purchase a Mission Passport to stamp or plane sockets for each mission you've visited. I purchased one myself it was only $3 which is cool if you like the memorabilia. It's free to entry but about $6 for parking. There is alot of walking here so be site to take some water if not yoh can purchase some for $1 at the gift shop.
