Read moreThe preserve itself is great—My complaint is about the elderly man who lives right next to the preserve parking lot. I drove well under the 25 mph posted speed limit on the road leading to the parking lot, slowed down upon entering the lot, then parked. I noticed the man walking towards me as I got out of my vehicle. He walked up to me and told me there are kids and dogs and I needed to slow down. WHAT?! I told him I was going under the speed limit and had checked my speed while driving. I believe I was going about 21 or 22 on the road. He told me he wasn't there to debate my speed, I just needed to be more careful.
Obviously if I am driving below the posted speed limit, and then slow down even more upon entering the parking lot, it isn't exactly like I am ripping and roaring into the lot. This guy seriously needs to occupy his time better and stop harassing visitors to public land.
If he approaches me again, I will tell him myself. It makes for an unpleasant visit when you know you may have to deal with someone trying to police the trail.
The trail itself is great. I have no idea why other reviewers said the beach is difficult to access...it is an extremely short walk from the parking lot. You just walk up to the little boardwalk platform which is just right in front of the lot and down a step or two and you are on the beach. Definitely not a "hike" by any stretch of the imagination.
The trails are great for birds and are level. Not strenuous at all. The hobbits trail is...
Read moreThis proved to be a very easy hike, but only if we stayed on the trail, which we didn't. We climbed on logs and carefully picked our way through a seeming maze of massive, sun bleached logs littering the shoreline. We were a little bummed that every sign was just a warning not to shoot off guns, rather than being informative about the local flora and fauna. We saw several colorful birds, including many American Robins. The views were lovely, and the trail was a nice, one mile-long trek. As a bonus, there's a Hobbit trail at the end of the loop. This was a truly magical trek through a forest that could have easily felt right at home bordering the Misty Mountains of Tolkein's Middle Earth. Moss covered most of the forest trees. This was met with an often soggy trail serpentining through the delicate trees. In the parts of the trail where the mud is worst, somebody painstakingly placed planks covered in wire mesh for sure-footed trekking. All in all, super...
