The cabin 6 we stayed in was very clean, stocked with all kitchen cutlery and silverware items. Nice bathrooms, comfortable beds and sofas. The open back porch is also nice to spend time in. Car parking was near enough to make loading and unloading a breeze. Though the price was a bit steep for the off season, ( 157/night after tax) for only 2 people, would be more justifiable for 2 couples or a family with kids, as there are two bedrooms with 2 queen beds each.
The park is quite nice for walking and hiking, the lake and shoreline are scenic and pretty clean.
The staff was very helpful and friendly when we had to call for various reasons.
The noise from the power plant across the lake was audible but not too loud. At night the power plant lights were a bit out of place viewed from the scenic shoreline or the back porch. During the day the power plant is hidden from view by trees on an island.
Migrating birds flew low over the water in formation while staying clear of other flocks and fishing boats.
The lake is big enough that the fishing boats zooming at high speeds did not have an impact at the shoreline. Motors noise was not very audible and the wake generated mostly dissipated by the time it reached the park shoreline.
Tent campsites are primitive but well situated close to the lake shore for a scenic experience.
There was a speed trap at the small town leading to the park. The town has 2-3 stop signs in close proximity, and a cop car was parked there to generate revenue from passing tourists. I saw one traffic stop while I was passing through, thankfully due to Google maps I was following the speed limit and stopped fully at the stop signs. I wish there was a way to place a permanent speed trap location on Google maps...
Read moreThere are several campsites right along the Kentucky Tennessee lake at this particular campsite. There is a gravel pad that you can use to set up your tent on at each of the campsites. There are nearby bathrooms but no showers for campers to use. The biggest negative about these sites is the fire pits location on the gravel pit tucked back into the corner of the pit so there isn't room to sit all the way around the campfire. There is some sort of mill or factory or refinery across the river that can be a bit loud, but that is just a minor negative. There's a whole other campsite away from this one that is very RV friendly, and several cabins available for rent if you want to camp in a cabin instead of in a tent. The staff at the visitor center and the folklife museum or phenomenal. They were very friendly and provided some valuable advice for hiking trails for our group that was there which was comprised of me and my brother and my 8 and 4-year-old sons. After we finished the story hike right off of the visitor center, my boys and I were given popsicles as a "reward" which was a really sweet gesture that I will fondly remember for years to come.
When we were exploring this park we were able to check out one of the cabins which was really nice. We also saw the event space if you're coming here with a large group of people for a work retreat or church group outing or similar...
Read moreI have lived an hour away all my life and never been to this park in all my years until now. We RV camped during a long holiday weekend this January. The campground was pretty empty and quiet during our stay. The park was a bit of a drive from the interstate but it was an easy tow. The campground was small, but very clean and quiet. The bathhouse was also very clean and the showers were hot and included a spray nozzle which was nice for my daughter.
We did not see a playground although the map said there was one. The trails are well marked and beautiful. We hiked part of the interpretive trail by the campground up to Pilot Knob! The view was def worth it. We loved the educational aspect of both the interpretive trail and museum. The sweetest most wholesome part of whole trip was when the museum clerk, Amber, texted me after we returned to camp to let me know she found my sticker I purchased but left behind. I had already chalked it up as a loss halfway through the hike back when I realized I left it. She not only sent it with the ranger but also shared the wifi password with us. Both employees went above and beyond for us for a $3 sticker and it was amazing! Be sure to take a trip to the lakefront too! It's gorgeous. We found a fun natural rock playground we all enjoyed one beautiful Sunday Funday. I highly recommend this park for a weekend getaway or...
