This was the most disorganized tourist destination I've ever been to. When you get to the park, you pay for your parking and get a numbered slip for each visitor. This is the order in which you will be taken on the tour. This is NOT explained to you at the gate...
When you get to the ticket counter, there may or may not be anyone there to sell you the very expensive tickets. We waited for 20 minutes just to buy the tickets- and we were the first in line.
When you get your ticket, they tell you about your ticket number, and that 30 people go on each tour. HOWEVER- the first couple of tours that went out (45 minutes wait for each) the numbers only moved about 10 digits per tour. When we got there, the number on the board was 264. We were 290. Two hours later, we finally got to go on the tour.
Note of caution- the cafeteria is PERMANENTLY closed. That was a long wait at lunch time on ice cream and peanut M&Ms- the only things to eat there.
When we got on the tour- the guide was pretty good. The audio description is awful. The tour is quite short lengthwise, but rather long time wise. But not a lot of information, and you don't really get that awesome cave cool down that you get in other caves- part of the reason we went was to do something outside but not too hot with the kids.
If you've been to other caves, this one is not terribly interesting. A large chamber, and some bats and things. But not a lot of interesting formations.
Out 8 year old liked it. For the adults it was just...
Read moreThe caverns were very beautiful. I wish the headsets had been charged so that my group and I had been able to listen to the history and information during our tour. The guide was very short and spoke very fast and was hard to hear and understand as she translated from English to Spanish very quickly with a group of 60. Maybe a smaller group would be best to be able to hear better and give the packs time to charge in between tours. People need to be advised to wear shoes with good traction as a gentleman fell several times and his family was clearly very upset. The trolleys were out of Jurassic Park and on the way back up it jerked many times as if it wasn't going to make it. When we got back to the main site everything was closed and we were corralled to their gift shop and not near restrooms, which by b the way one out of 3 toilets were clogged. Also the jewelry vendor who sold me a Larissa Santo Domingo bracelet and earing set wasn't totally honest about it being silver. It has turned black. I wish the island wasn't suffering such economic disasters. Their employees are left with a huge burden to work extra hard and in positions that are not in their scope as in plumbing repairs and being part of the tour guiding to trolleys. There were a couple of dogs..one with a broken leg that wobbled as we sat and waited to walk up a hill to the trolleys. Beautiful place...unorganized and lacking in providing information of this wondrous and...
Read moreHere are a few logistics to note:
Parking is $4. Entry fee is $18 per adult.
We arrived around 12:40-12:45 PM, but were informed that the 1 PM time slot was full, so we had to wait for the 2 PM slot. However, we couldn't enter the park until 1:15 PM, so we ate at a spot up the street and returned.
The 2 PM group consisted of about 50 people with one guide. As others have mentioned, unless you're right next to the guide, it's difficult to hear anything. The group had to stagger in to take in the surroundings since managing everyone together was impossible.
There is an audio machine available, but it’s challenging to use it while also handling your phone as a flashlight and holding onto the rail simultaneously. Many people were more focused on taking selfies than managing their kids. At one point, the guide stopped speaking and said, "whenever you’re ready I’ll continue," because people were talking over her throughout the presentation.
The cave itself is pretty small with just two main scenic points; the rest is pitch black. There are no bats in the cave due to flooding from a recent hurricane. The cave has 100% humidity and was very warm. The walk back up is strenuous if you are not in good shape, although there is a limited shuttle service available.
Overall, the experience was underwhelming and felt like a waste of $40. Perhaps it would be better if we could explore the cave on our own instead of being...
